Ask Roy Nelson how he's been preparing for his fight against Mirko "Cro Cop" Filipovic at UFC 137, and you'll find that "Big Country's" sense of humor is still very much intact after two straight losses.
"I've just been working out in the cemetery a lot," he told MMA Fighting recently. "I've got to get ready for the left kick. I want to see what it's like."
It's a typical Roy Nelson answer, which is to say slightly absurd and said with a straight face, as if to daring you to say, 'No, seriously.' But these aren't joking times for Nelson. After coming up short against Junior dos Santos and then Frank Mir, Nelson is facing a potentially dire situation.
Don't tell him that, of course.
"All fights are dire," Nelson said. "I've seen guys get cut after one. I've seen guys lose three or four and still have a job. In this business, there's no rhyme or reason. It's MMA. It's like when you go into the Octagon: anything can happen."
Does he take anything seriously? This lack of urgency on his part is immature. He seems less worried about whether he gets cuts than any of us.
And I read that he characterized questions about his weight as attacks from "mean people". When is telling someone their health is in jeopardy because they are obese considered mean? Dude needs to diet. You'd have to be a complete moron to not see that he's at risk for Type II Diabetes and Cardiovascular Disease. He could be the first fighter to suffer a stroke IN the cage. smh.

Because he always brings it against top competition. As long as he keeps that up, why should he get cut?

That's not even true though. He did not "bring it" against either JDS or Mir after the first few minutes of the first round. He just took a beating, and didn't go out. He was a punching bag for 90% of the JDS fight.

Roy takes things seriously ... he just doesn't let it show in interviews.

even if you don't think about all of that, weight management is still good athletically. better speed, cardio, etc.
As much as he jokes it looks like he lost some much needed weight. I wouldn't be suprised if he KOs Crocop but both guys have there backs against the wall in this fight which always makes for a war.
He needs to step it up. He has potential, but he hasn't really pushed as hard as he should. He looks like he dropped some weight, but he still looks like he's 48 years old. He does not look the picture of health - at all.
