"Does anyone else feel like Bruce Lee's influence in MMA is overstated?"
Nope
Pretty much a Godfather-type.Imagine Marlon Brando with a background in training/teaching ability.

Yes... if Bruce Lee never would have been born there would have been no difference to where we are today. To all the Bruce Lee nuthuggers get over it.
Bruce lee died in 1973 and it took a Gracie to make everyone talk about fighting. Now Bruce did create the whole Karate genre of bullshit over the top movies that made dipshits want to do flying spin kicks. That I will give Bruce Lee.
STFU
The only thing the Gracies did was promote themselves to the level they thought they deserved. Thats why they all either ducked fighting (Rickson) or asked for outrageous amounts of money (royce royler) to do things they claimed they were doing to prove to the world how great they were.
"We started the UFC to prove to the world that gracie jj is the best fighting system on the planet... What? Someone wants to fight one of us? Well that will be one million dollars please."
Not to mention the gracies most certainly did NOT promote cross training. They were VERY set against admitting anything that wasnt from their system was effective.
MMA stands for MIXED martial arts... and thats what Lee did.

What kills me is that you guys are so disrespectful and you just don't get it. Bruce Lee fought nobody. Not once. He was Jackie Chan of his era. Thats all.
Lastly, I have seen Bruce Lee demo's and I must have missed all the boxing, wrestling, and Judo. All I see is a bunch of goofy ass flashy standup to impress the feeble minded round eye that actually bought into that worthless crap. And I swear to God if you bring up the "he trained Judo for a weekend with Gene Lebel so he must have understood Judo" than I am going to throw up.
Also a major LOL at you calling at Rickson for ducking fights. Can you make the claim that Bruce Lee ducked? No, because he never actually fought, so yeah awesome point.
You have obviously never taken the time to read any of Lee's stuff. "The Tao of Jeet Kune Do". Buy it, read it, come back to us less ignorant.
I'm looking forward to this series, always a fan of hearing modern fighters give tribute and perspective on Bruce Lee.

Theres a big difference between a martial artist and a fighter... sometimes martial artists are fighters, sometimes fighters are not martial artists. Just because a true martial artist doesnt go around claiming to be 400 and 0 in street and challenge matches (Ricksons claim BTW) doesnt make him any less of a prodigy when it comes to the arts.
Sometimes the best coaches and teachers are the ones who understand.. not to ones who compete.
And yes Rickson ducked... He WAS a fighter who actually fought. When Saku spanked several members of the gracie family Rickson was called upon handle business.
What was the quote?
"I wont fight Sakuraba because he doesnt have a fighters 'aura'"
Of all the lame ass excuses.
Face it... the Gracies refused to do exactly what Bruce Lee preached decades ago.. and that is learn from who you can, dont get locked into one single aspect of martial arts. Its a lot easier to disappear and say its because Im not making enough money (Royce after ufc 3)
Brue Lee was one of, if not the FIRST true Mixed Martial Artist.
His style was adaptaed from multiple martial arts.
not sure how anyone could say differently.

Did he really learn them? Was he good at Judo? Was he good at wrestling or boxing? The only article I could find about Bruce Lee and boxing made sure that is specifically pointed out that he had zero technique.
So while I have nothing against Bruce, he was most certainly not as well rounded as all you folks would like us to believe.
this is an excellent point and one that I think much of the confusion stems from. being a mixed martial artist doesn't automatically mean you are a master or every martial art known to man, it means you acknowledge and pursue martial arts outside of just 1, at least that's what it means imo.
Bruce's analogy about being fluid, like water, and adapting to every situation as the situation calls is the true nature of mixed martial arts imo...
