He has a waaaaay better body of work than Ortega …who I am a fan of but he cannot compare overall at this point. Ortega is not only more aided by his striking, which is no knock, this is MMA after all, but while he can snatch that guillotine on from my angles, Oliveira has way more methods of attack. Watch any of his fights to see this.
Again, see the way he was trying to take Teymur’s back standing then drops to lock Teymur’s legs.
I agree he’s awesome. He doesn’t really follow the traditional BJJ model of position before submission but he’s very good at catching opportunistic subs.
And to be candid he should have a couple more subs under his belt. It was a miracle that Paul Felder escaped his darce and in his first fight with Jim Miller he got careless on his toe hold attempt.
I just looked and he’s only won one fight in the UFC not by submission. He’s got 13 subs. I guess that’s the record. He is a couple seconds and a couple centimeters away from having 15.
I don’t know who is in 2nd place but I don’t see anyone taking his record for a while. He’ll probably keep going for a while too.
He does have his share of sub losses and as mentioned, does not have the elite set of wins like a Maia, Nog, Werdum but I still think he is the most dangerous sub guy right now and possibly ever. I think in this category, it is between him and Aoki. 2 guys that can strike from anywhere, anytime.
TwentyNineTwentyEight - You guys and this GOAT shit after every show, lol.
Ive been saying this about Oliveira specifically for a while. He already has the sub wins record but even before he got it, I was saying he is probably the most dangerous sub guy. Am I caught up in the moment? Or am I right? Take a look for yourself…
No you are right. He has proved he is the greatest submission artist of all time in MMA. There are different styles within BJJ, so he may not be the best BJJ fighter; meaning he’d get beat by guys like Gilbert Burns and Maia in a BJJ match but his offensive style and always attacking the sub whenever possible makes him different. He is just massively underrated and not talked about at all because he doesn’t speak english and has had some weird losses and has missed weight a lot.
Exactly. He’s a quirky dude. He also has some strange losses. he reminds me of Palhares a bit. There have been a couple of instances where of he doesn’t get a sub he will almost get demoralized. He’s dropped some weird losses in ways he probably shouldn’t have lost.
I think his weaknesses as a fighter are psychological more than technical.
He’s a special talent that is overlooked in the grand scheme of things.
He’s one of the best ever at chaining front headlock and back attacks in scrambles. He’ll attack a darce or anaconda and if it fails he spins behind the opponent and locks the RNC right away without even going for a harness grip first. He has some seriously underrated submission chains.
I’ve been doing BJJ for a long time and most people I train with like him but they think of him as an opportunistic fighter more than a classic BJJ guy. Plus he never really had a BJJ career so our guys don’t get excited to watch him fight the way they do with Maia, Davi Ramos, Durinho, Jacare, etc.

Nog, Aoki, Mir are some others who didn’t have elite or extensive BJJ backgrounds
Wasa-B - Oliveira can more aggressively hunt for subs than all those guys imo somewhat like Aoki. Every angle, every position, they can hunt for something. Btw, why does everyone leave Aoki and Saku out of their respective dues?
Aoki was before my time. So that's why I dont put him in. Havent even seen one of his fights. But people rate him highly.
The gracie hunter is at the top of the pyramid too.

Goddamn noobs.
Aoki fought last year, late last year if I remember correctly.....
I will never forget that Hirota hammer lock, nasty shit.

I can't stand Aoki; fuck that guy.
Is this a likeability contest? Is he not similar to Oliveira in style and ability?

Totally. This may be controversial but I’ll throw Nate Diaz on that list. He’s got fantastic jiu-jitsu but didn’t compete that much beyond brown belt and never held any significant BJJ titles.

Great from the front headlock, not so dangerous everywhere else. I think of him kinda like palhares- super dangerous but will crumble if things don’t go his way.
nowhere near as fundamentally sound as Maia or jacare.
he should fight Ryan hall next if he is still at 145
