I’m talking about the hvwt version of Couture that was at his peak…he had a very grinding wrestling style but how would he stack up against today’s Phvwts? I see a handful of great style matchups…could Rabdy out wrestle And grind Stipe to a decision win? Would Miocic make it a sprawl and brawl strategy? Velasquez vs Randy would be cool too…
Great question. Using UFC rankings, here are my thoughts:
205: DC beats Randy. Gus is a toss up, but I don’t think today’s Gus is a better striker or anti-wrestler than the Chuck that Randy took out was. Not hard picking Randy to walk through everyone else in the top 15.
HW: Stipe is likely the favorite, and with good cause. Randy beats up today’s Reem. Beats Francis worse than Stipe did. Maybe struggles with Werdum because of match ups. Beats up everyone else.

Randy vs Gus would be a hell of a match…could Rabdy clinch and wrestle fuck him?
I don’t see Stipe using much sprawl and brawl vs Randy because I wouldn’t expect many leg attacks from Randy until Stipe was exhausted and ready to go anyways.
From Randy we’d see some boxing designed to close the distance and initiate his greco clinch. Expect some wall and stall and lots of dirty boxing. Randy would look to trip for his take down or snatch single up against the cage where Stipe has no where to back up. He did this approach vs Brock who most expected to sprawl and brawl, when he wasn’t blast doubling Randy from here to the moon and back. Of course we know Randy was very competitive with Brock in the wrestling department and even took the big man down.
Today Randy is a top contender in the HW division, and he certainly would be in the fight vs Stipe.
Randy fought 2 wrestlers better than him (Randleman and Van Arsdale) and hung with a top class of 220 pd freestylers (Mark Kerr, Coleman, Angle, Kerry McCoy, Dominick Black, tons of legit 220 pds were in the US during the 1996 Olympic cycle much deeper than 2008). I don’t think Randy would have had issues with Cromier as bad as people think. I can see him gassing him out in a “dog fight” very easily like he did to Van Arsdale.

You think Randy beats Velasquez up?
I think it looks similar to the first Chuck fight, tbh. Randy uses his striking and head movement to get doubles and clinch. I don’t think Gus can win that fight galloping backwards. Probably doesn’t look dissimilar from DC v. Gus.

Yeah but as far as putting wrestlign together with mma cormier is light years ahead of any of those dudes.
this. I think DC has the striking edge and I'm not sure Randy could overcome the size advantage in the rest of the division given how much better all HW's are these days.

The heavyweights are a lot better these days? It’s mostly the same heavies, only old and near retirement plus Ngannou who has 1 single dimension plus Stipe.
I’m thinking here the heavies of today get smoked by Randy era heavies. I’m not seeing much better at all, let alone “how much better…”
