Profile of Helio Gracie's 1st Fights in the 1930's

Ok guys, here's part three. Helio closes out the 1930's with five matches -- including rematches with two of his best opponents, and a heavyweight boxer:

Thanks Carson. It seems that the lack of effort on Massagoichi's part is what they're talking about; they may be inferring he wasn't what he presented himself as, too.

If it were thought of as a work, I'd think both fighters would be subject to penalties, not just Massagoichi.

Pedreira describes other fighters fixing fights, and participating in pro wrestling, but not Helio.

Also, my name's Tommy, not Mike. Ha!

COol.  Looking forward to Part 2 (unless I am missing it on the website?)

I am very grateful to the Gracies for all they have done for martial arts, but it's interesting that if the Gracie's had been more truthful, we wouldn't be where we are today

Ian Paisley is my hero - I am very grateful to the Gracies for all they have done for martial arts, but it's interesting that if the Gracie's had been more truthful, we wouldn't be where we are today

Not really possible to say that.

First, the "Gracies" don't all speak in one voice. Even in the 1930's you'll find that even brothers George and Helio, the two most active of the era, have different styles and approaches to jiu-jitsu.

Later Carlson and Helio had their issues, to the point of Carlson saying in an interview: "My Jiu-Jitsu is completely different from theirs, my technique has nothing to do with “Gracie Jiu-Jitsu.” I AM CARLSON GRACIE and that's the way it is in the ring.",

Check out Renzo's appearance on FightWorks Podcast a few years back for his issues with Relson, Rorion, Rener and Ryron.

They don't agree on BJJ history or today's reality. Re: Rener & Ryron:

"One thing I feel sorry about, is Rorion’s kids. They are very good kids, but their father feeds them nonsense. So, they could be unbelievable fighters, but they are going to end up as mediocre fighters, mediocre people. They are going to go through life as great businessmen. If I was them, I’d be selling self-help books, that’s what they should be doing. There is more money in that, instead of claiming that they are real fighters. They are far from being real fighters. Far."

Second, we have no idea what might have happened had Brazilian jiu-jitsu been presented differently. Rorion et al could have extolled the virtues of groundfighting while giving credit to more people, and he still could have helped create the UFC. You can play what if all day. Maybe the family wouldn't have had all the division it has today, if things were different. Maybe Rickson would have fought in the UFC. Maybe the MMA world would be even bigger.

Who knows? We know the family deserve a huge amount of credit for what we have. If all you take from these articles is, "there's more to the story," then I'm cool with that.

in for later

What is the history of the BJJ belt system? Any good articles on it? I keep finding that colored belts developed in Paris with Judo around 1935, but any one know how/when blue-purple-brown-black-Coral-red/white-red came to be?
