Rebney takes shot at Sonnen/UFC

Bellator has become a sad embarrassment.

How hard you think it is for Bjorn to spew this shit with a striaght face knowing his pimp Viacom is forcing him to send his guys to some pathetic redneck WWE clone?

Bellator is going in the wrong direction with the wrestling tie-in, the exact opposite of what their strategy should be.

And they badly need a name change. To anyone that isn't already an MMA fan, it's "WTF is a 'Bellator'???"

I think the worst thing Bellator could be doing for the sport is tying it into the pro wrestling market. It takes legitimacy away from the sport.

Also the King Mo treatment does definitely detract from his point. Mo can't win the "toughest tournament in sports?" Let's make it an easier path. Silly. Phone Post 3.0

No Viacom is making TNA take them on to help promote the PPV. Phone Post 3.0
Whatever the reason the crossover is a mistake and an embarrassment. Phone Post 3.0

JerodR - He has a point but more than likely none of his fighters could challenge for a UFC title either. Not quite the same level. Also Bellator has never had to sell a PPV and not that they are trying they are using people that the UFC built up recognition for to do so. He has a point but also doesn't have much room to talk at the same time. Phone Post 3.0

Fact- Bellator did not show up until well after organizations like the UFC built up MMA as a viable and profitable sport.

Fact- Bellator pays fighters much less while enjoying more financial back up.

Fact- Bellator has never had and does not know what it takes to have a successful PPV. They have not been able to compete with TNA let alone the UFC.

Fact- Bellators moral principals are shot when they give King Mo another shot as well as using Rampage/Tito to sell their first PPV. They are using names others have built in while the "real competition" takes a back seat.

Fact- Bellator has a TUF rip off filling a hole that the UFC left behind. On top of that they have a UFC LEGEND as one of its stars. Yet again coat tale riding.

That is not being a shill my friend. That is called reality. Bellator is a great alternative and I too did not agree with Sonnens title shot. Bellator can't talk though because they have never had a successful PPV on anything or any stars they have built up themselves. TNA is the place where WWE and WCW stars go to retire and now apparently Bellator will become the same for the UFC. Phone Post 3.0

Agree with Rebney on this one. Very good point.

He's not saying anything untrue, but at the same time, the UFC doesn't have any champs that aren't the best in their division. Rankings are still earned, even if it's not strictly a tournament. I guess Bjorn doesn't consider boxing a sport either.

He has a point there...hate to say it. Phone Post 3.0

Sonnen wasn't coming off of two losses when he got the fight with Jones and he got it by stepping up on short notice after others refused. Those claiming Rebney isn't saying anything untrue are verifiably incorrect.

Bellator Fan - Fact: Bellator is great product with a superior competitive structure (something MMA needs to reach another level) Phone Post 3.0

I'm new around here, so, apologies if this has been asked before but.......

It's true, but chael would beat every single fighter on their roster 205 and under. Maybe even the heavyweights... Phone Post 3.0

Rebney takes shot at Sonnen/UFC

Bellator President Bjorn Rebney spoke to the media on Monday and defended the way his company did business in regards to title fights, and at the same time took a shot at Chael Sonnen and the UFC:

"Our point of difference is that we're real sports competition, and when it boils down to world title fights, when it boils down to crowning our champion at 170, or 55 or 45 or whatever weight class, guys are going to earn the right to fight for that championship and they're going to have to beat the champion. It's the toughest tournament in sports, it's real sports competition.

We're not sitting around waiting for some wrestler to lose two fights straight and then bark his way into a 205 world title fight. That's just not the essence of what we do."

Now this is how the business model for the sport is supposed to be.  If this PPV is even marginally succesful, the UFC will finally have some competition for fans and fighters alike.   A four man tournament is much better than some loud mouth felon being allowed to bark his way to title fights.

Sonnen didn't simply bark his way into the Jones fight...he stepped up on a week's notice to fight JBJ, which would typically mean a solid beatdown, and crush any title hopes, as far off as they were. The barking came after Jones pulled out. Then, Dana wants to make an example by rewarding a"company guy", and low and behold the guy has just started a shit-talking match with a guy whom everyone hated at the moment. You don't let a crisis go to waste, and it was the right fight.

But it was far from them saying "he talks well, give him the title shot."

Its a cheap shot....but he is still right.

I mean at least Ortiz or Rampage wont get an immediate title-shot after the title-shot. At least not yet.
