Rickson promotes J.J Machado to Red/Black Belt

Surfer Joe - I don't post much but congrats to JJ Machado. Both Rickson and Jean Jacques embody what jiu-jitsu should be and look like both on the mat and off the mat.
Im sorry, but I have to point out great lurkers when I see them.  94 posts 1/1/01 join date.  Not posting much is a bit of an understatement.  Great post though.

Fadda & Filho are 10th degree red belts.

I am referring to someone in the Brazilian Jiu Jitsu world who is known by a single name ... "Rickson."

Ookla?

crowbar -  Fadda & Filho are 10th degree red belts.

Yes, but the thousand dollar questions is.........red belts under WHO ?

Maeda.

But much like Carlos,I suspect foul play.

Foul play ? according to wikipedia it says that............couldn't resist. Flame away :-)

Ansari -
Chimonos Revenge - Approximately how long does it take to get to that level?

Just Curious
According to www.ibjjf.org/graduation.htm and assuming I did my math right, it takes at least 31 years to go from black belt to 7th degree red/black belt.

The earliest you could get your 7th degree red/black belt is age 50 since you can't get a black belt until you're 19.

19 y/o black belt
+3 years for 1st degree = age 22
+3 2nd 25
+3 3rd 28
+5 4th 33
+5 5th 38
+5 6th 43
+7 7th 50
+7 8th 57
+10 9th 67

Damn, that's a long time.
Much respect for the guys that get there.

One question yet remains though,
At what level do you get the "Glow"?

Noooooooooooo, you fucked it up ! It's 'Aura' !

Pretty cool. Props to Jean Jacques Machado. Awesome to see Rickson promote him as well. Props to both of the Legends.

TTT

big respect to JJ and congrats

"One question yet remains though,

After they defeat Sho'nuff (The Shogun of Harlem).

ttt for Jean Jacques

i wonder if he's paid his IBJJF fee for that belt...someone should tell him that it don't count unless it's certified by the Federation.

Gracie Official Belt Ranks

Official Federation Belt Rankings

of Gracie Members Teaching in the U.S.

The official certifying organization for the Gracie style of Jiu-Jitsu is the
Federação de Jiu-Jitsu do Estado do Rio de Janeiro, Brasil.

The Federação controls all teaching certifications
(Assistant, Instructor, Professor, Master, and Grand Master), as well as all promotions to the
rank of Black Belt and above. Not all Black Belts are certified to teach.

The Belt Ranks awarded by the Federação
are (from highest to lowest):

      Grand Master -- Red Belt -- 9th & 10th degree

      Master -- Red and Black Belt -- 7th & 8th degree

      Professor -- Black Belt -- 2nd through 6th degree

Instructor -- Black Belt (without degrees)

Assistant Instructor -- Black Belt (with plain red band)

Fighter -- Black Belt (with white band)

It typically takes between 6 and 15 years to achieve a Black Belt from the
Federação. All promotions involving any Black Belt rank
require the recommendation of 2 Masters and the approval of at least 5 officials of the
Federação. Ranks below Black Belt are
awarded by individual Professors and are then confirmed publicly through competition
with other students of the same rank. Beginners and new students wear a
White Belt. Adult belt levels progress from
White Belt to Blue Belt, then Purple Belt,
and finally Brown Belt, after which the practitioner becomes eligible for
a Black Belt. There are a larger number of belt colors for children.

The Official Federação Belt Rankings of Gracie family members
teaching in the U.S. are as follows.

Grand Master -- Red Belt -- 9th degree

Master -- Red and Black Belt -- 8th degree

Master -- Red and Black Belt -- 7th degree

      • Rorion Gracie

    Professor -- Black Belt -- 5th degree

      • Rickson Gracie (not formally certified)

    Professor -- Black Belt -- 4th degree

      • Renzo Gracie
      • Royce Gracie (not formally certified)

    Professor -- Black Belt -- 3rd degree

      • Ralph Gracie

Every instructor claiming a rank of Black Belt or above should be able to prove
his rank by showing a Diploma and a Certificate issued by the Federação
with original signatures of the 5 officials of the Federation
who confirmed his rank.

If you have a question about a particular instructor's rank, and he is not
on this list, ask to see his Certificate or
Diploma from the Federação or send
an E-mail inquiry to
