For several years, Gina Carano carried the flag for mixed martial arts, but when she left to purse an acting career, women's MMA suffered. Ronda Rousey carries that flag now, but she hopes to create a place for women that won't need her when she's done fighting:

Rousey recognizes those fears, she said she’s determined not to leave a “Gina Carano void” of her own.

“Everyone loved Gina and Gina really started all the interest in women’s MMA, and when she left, the entire sport detonated without her,” Rousey told MMAjunkie. “I never want to leave the sport in that state she had to when she left. I’ve really accomplished a lot at this point, and I’m starting to think about more than just the present moment and thinking more down the line and how I want to leave some sort of a legacy.”

While such sentiments aren’t uncommon among fighters, Rousey wants her legacy to extend far beyond wins, losses, title defenses and first-round armbars. It may be a lofty goal, but Rousey is determined to make a big enough impact on the sport that she can point to herself as a reason why women are still in the UFC – not just a few years from now, but decades down the line.

“I really want there to be women’s MMA fights in the UFC 20 years from now and be able to sit there and just revel in what was created – the way I see Royce Gracie sitting front row to the UFC’s now,” Rousey said. “I want to really be able to sit and have that look of contentment and have that smile that I see Royce with when he’s at those events.”

Shes been saying this forever.. Phone Post 3.0

She is probably gonna get shit for being too confident or whatnot, but she isn't really wrong here.

In the same way Royce might not have been the best of his family, or the best representative of where BJJ came from, he became the face of the UFC and submission grappling for a helluva long time and paved the way for future athletes. And until someone shuts down Rousey, you can't really knock the girl for her dominance thus far

...I wonder if Carano gets pissed she didn't compete a little later, and if Cyborg wishes she got in on the UFC train.

As much as I dislike her for the roiding, she really had a chance to take out Rousey and co-opt this WMMA wave the UFC is pushing

Congrats to Gina for pursing her acting career Phone Post 3.0

From pure aesthetics, it's not even close.

Seems like she's getting ahead of herself. She's only 7-0 and fought in the UFC once.

Not true.

Ronda is more of a legit badass as far as looks go than Gina and Gina is too hefty to be just the pretty girl type.

Ronda could do action movies etc. she's truly fiesty and could harness her anger well in acting. I would say that Ronda has more personality and a better look for action films, she's a true alpha bitch(I say that with all due respect).

You need to be a bit crazy to be at the high levels of acting, Ronda could harness the tragedy of losing her father to turn on tears if needed too I am sure.

No dude... nobody is gonna wanna listen to her talk in a movie. Phone Post 3.0

ABE FROMAN CRE-AMED ME - Gina Carano is a sellout and she's adored on here.

Carano abandoned these loser MMA fans and they worship her.

Ronda completely re-built the mess that Carano left and gets minimal credit.

Cyborg getting popped for steroids and signing with Tito Ortiz cost her the biggest payday possible in a fight with Rousey, I hope they can make that happen eventually, so Ronda can get a truly competitive fight one day.
Agree with the last part of your post but the first part is hardly fair.

Gina left woman MMA because it frankly was a mess and she could never she herself get the win against Cyborg.

Roussey got the support and backing from Uncle Dana pretty fast aka woman in the Ufc , decided to "market" herself by becoming a proto female Diaz and she got to avoid opponents like Cyborg.

I do think Roussey is the better athlete and fighter the Gina ever was. But you cannot buy style and grace . Gina has it in abundance. With Roussey being "real" seems to take precedence. Phone Post 3.0

Gina is still hotter =p Phone Post 3.0

Would have love to see a Carano vs Cyborg 2. Phone Post 3.0

There is no 'look' for success in Hollywood. They need all kinds of 'looks' to fill all kinds of roles. Plenty of women who aren't your classical beauties have had very successful careers (Kathy Bates, Frances McDormand, Glenn Close, Jodie Foster, Juliette Lewis, etc.). As a matter of fact, many of those 'less attractive' actresses have longer careers, since they never got typecast into the typical Hollywood starlet roles.

Then don't lose once and leave without an official retirement, problem solved. Phone Post 3.0

I'd be happy if she would just post pics of her and Gina's "Voids". Phone Post

Well, for one thing, we actually miss Gina...

Gina fought Cyborg. She didn't use her marketability to hide behind her promoter.

Gina is the Royce Gracie of women's MMA there is nothing Ronda can do to change that.

Gina Pulled 5.58 million viewers on CBS without the UFC. Ronda isn't filling voids she is still in the shadow. Phone Post 3.0

Eggbert - Gina is an absolute sweetheart. Rhonda is a bitch. No one will even mention Rhonda when she's done mma Phone Post 3.0

Thats true. They will completely forget one of the first 2 women to fight in the UFC, the first female title holder and the face of WMMA in the UFC. She better start being nicer or people are going to forget her. Do any of the Rousey haters think before posting about her or does the hate just overwhelm your brain?

Uhhhh-those women you just mentioned are academy award winning actresses, which means someone thinks they can act, watching Gina act is painful. Watch Haywire or the new fast and furious and tell me Gina wasn't cast for her looks. Honda is a cheeseburger away from her old Olympic physique-she better save her money is my advice to her.

I'd want to fill Gina's void if I were her too.
