Ryron Gracie a 5th degree black belt????

graciesrule -  in a straight Jiu Jitsu match Ryron would beat BJ pretty easily

BJ won the Mundials right after he got his BB. Ryron couldn't even win his dad's tournament.

And Rorion is a better teacher than Rickson? No. Rickson holds a seminar and half the audience was blackbelts. I doubt there'd be a similar turnout for rorion unless the seminar was about marketing.

Why not go and ask (or test)him?

Copa Pacifica VI

The second black belt match of the day pitted new black belt Ryron Gracie vs. one of the top competitors in the world right now, Alexander “Xande Riberio. The match saw a brief exchange of grips from standing before Xande pulled guard. From there Xande looked for a pass and began to sit forward and Ryron seemed content to fall back into his guard. This put Xande up 2-0 however. From out of bounds the match was restarted from their feet at the center again and after another brief stand up exchange, Ryron pulled guard this time. Ryron was never able to establish his positioning well, and Xande quickly passed to side control. From there Ryron worked to reconstitute his guard, however Xande controlled well, and nearly took Ryron’s back at one point. Ryron remained composed and diligently attempted to reestablish his guard. After a brief scramble, both men made it back tot their feet and this time Xande jumped to guard. Ryron moved well and nearly took Xande’s back, however Xande simply bridged and Ryron fell over. Ryron worked back to his guard and then look to take Xande’s back again, and tried a choke. However, without a strong position, Xande was able to spin out quickly. Ryron tried for the back a third time, but once more without establishing hooks Xande flipped him over again. This put Ryron back to his guard, which Xande passed to side control. Ryron worked for the guard one last time, but Xande played very tightly as time ran out. Xande wins 8-0.

Shen, The 7 th degree Black Belt info came from an interview Rickson did in the mid 90's explaining about the skill level and pecking order in Brazil where he explains
that here 30 top jiu jitsu fighters and the 5 top ones he beat back to back in one tourney. Even Judo had technique requirements up to 8 th degree but now only skill/technique can elevate you to 5 th degree. Rickson got his 7 th at 30 , the only one to get it younger was Carley at 22. Bj does not train with the gi very much and yes he did win the mundials many years ago but now is a different story. Ryron has trained with MMA/Vale tudo with Vitor Belfort and Alessio Sakara and totally dominated them. Why do you thin Jake Shields is training with Ryron? Also ask arund about how rolling goes between Kron and both Rener and Ryron, you would be surprised. And Kron is close to Marcelo Garcia's level now.

what ryron does against kron, vinny, big nog,or any other bb's that stop by cant be used to judge him.he needs to do it so all the world can see.which means a match under any rules.

what 12 just said. And how in the world can you say BJ doesn't train in the gi very much anymore? You train at his academy? He never has stopped training in the gi as he loves it. As for Rickson, he got the degree from his father who had his own criteria, not the federation, so the requirements for 7th are definitely not like how you stated. Its more about time in grade and politics at times just as in judo.

Wow...the brothers totally dominate Kron,Big Nog,Vinny,Belfort, Sakara, Shields etc..etc...During all training sessions huh.

pretty skillfull

dominate,thats a strong word.its just training.

bj trains and teaches with the gi on, he just takes it off to prepare for fights.

I was actually present at the above mentioned Copa event and dont ever remember Xande being put in any danger....It also didnt look like he was going as hard as he usually does against other oponents. thats just my oppinion

"dominate,thats a strong word.its just training."

Agreed but That is the word & context given by the person who posted it....I also think its a pretty strong word especially for the names mentioned (one of them being ricksons son and a cuzn) and pretty disrespectful to puff up ones instructor based on training sessions.

But since their students describe some world class skills against some of the best, it would be nice to see them in the competition arena more and hopefully MMA. Obviously other Helio trained Gracies dont see it as selling out Helios philosophy. From whats being reported Helios defensive/patient/selfdefense style can be dominating.

I also seen a interview on Ralek Gracie where he said he was in negotiations with strikeforce to fight soon....any new info on that

FatBuddha - if you know anyone 4rth degree or lower that can tap him, teach better, or who knows more about jiu-jitsu, let me know

marcelo?

"Shen, ... Rickson got his 7 th at 30 , the only one to get it younger was Carley at 22."

This is becoming ridiculous. So who gave Carley his 7th at the age of 22? And does this mean he was a 4th degree black belt in junior high school?

And, for that matter, who gave Helio the 10th? And at what ages was Helio 1st, 2nd, ... 8th, and 9th? Or did he just one day decide he was a 10th degree black belt?

"Or did he just one day decide he was a 10th degree black belt?"

Its sounding more and more like this is the method.

Ok, Rickson does not know how he got his rank! Thats why he told his story. No joke Helio gave him his grade. Carley was awarded his 7 th by Carlson cause he was tapping everyone including Carlson and sad part was he started jiu Jitsu in his late teens. As far as BJ goes you should read the interview from a few years ago where he was attending a camp with the Machado's hosting and talked about how unbelievable there knowledge and skill was. BJ goes on to say compared to them hes a Blue belt-Black Belt in the gi and hope to become a Purple Belt-Black Belt level. So I guess the grandson(Ryron) of the Grandmaster who trained and lived with him would not have a higher level of knowldge than BJ. OK,sure.

is alessio sakara that italian guy with all the tats cause if it is, he is like a white belt in bjj. that guy does not earn anyone any bragging rights for bjj

1: I call bullshit on Carley tapping Carlson. If Carley was tapping Carlson, then he'd have been the one fighting Vale Tudo. You can talk shit about Carlson now since he's dead and can't defend himself but I doubt Carley was bragging about such a thing when the old man was alive.

2: Carlson couldn't award a 7th when Carley was that age because Carlson would have had to promote Carley over his own rank.

Helio could make up whatever rank and ranking system he liked. That was his right.

....would have been nice if he left behind something definitive for the rest of us to understand though :)

ok, seriously take the damn blinders off. No way can Carlson somehow rank Carley above himself as Mick already pointed out. As for BJ, yeah he was in awe of the Machado's knowledge, esp Rigan's, which is of no surprise if you actually train and have ever gotten to train specifically with them. As for the comparison with Ryron, its idiotic to even speculate on. Hell if you want to compare apples to oranges, it took BJ less time to get to the black belt level than Ryron, and in 3yrs of training he beat people that had been training in the art since birth to become the first American Mundial champ, so does THAT not demonstrate his true level of knowledge?

In any event, Ryron as well as Rener are DEFINITELY fantastic technicians and their skills cannot be denied. But unless they start competing again heavily this talk of either of them being able to beat alot of tournament tested guys is meaningless (and mind you, I think if they wanted to they could both become Mundial champs as long as they were not in Roger's division). Its their fanboys that buy into the luminosity as they both have always come across as humble and sincere in their teachings of GJJ.
