Cung fought (and defeated) China's champion in an event in Hawaii. He fought a shootboxing champ in the US based Draka league (while it still existed). Cung Ko'ed a Kyokushinkai legend at the Shidokan event. Cung went to world championships 3 times.
But since the UG didn't see those events, they just don't exist LOL
Guys, its really hard to guage the amatuer sanshou world championships. Many of the chinese and russians were pro while we only had an amatuer circuit at the time. So it was a big step up for us to compete at an elite level and the worlds.
When I competed in Sanda it was the funniest time I had in my competition career. I'm only sad that there isn't a professional league in the US that I can compete in.
The two places where San Da was growing and developing were San Jose, CA and NY, NY. NY's kickboxing circuit got shut down by the commission and the USKBA (who was doing the first pro matches on the East Coast) still hasn't been allowed to do pro events in the state. In CA, apparently San Shou/San da is now ILLEGAL! Go figure! They made it illegal!
I spoke to the commissioner, Armando something? and the problem is the kickboxing rules were written in like the 1970's under the old PKA ear, where "throws" were illegal. So the law says you can't have kickboxing with throws... sort of making San Shou illegal
King of Sanda #3 watched on TV in China? Not happening.
????
And everybody knows the sport? Yes, quite many know the sport by name but don't follow it.
Disclaimer:
I've lived in China for over three years now, been coming here since 1998, fluent in Chinese, so I probably wouldn't know a sh*t about this thing.
Rorion protected Royce from Chris Dolman, who called out the Gracies many times around the time of the early UFCs. He even sent them a letter asking to fight any of them and they never replied.
King of San Da premiered in China in 1998. In 00, 01 and 02 it WAS the #3 watched TV show. Since 02 it hasn't been on TV much at all, oweing to the fact one of the producers stole sponsorship money and escaped to Hawaii
