When Rashad snatched Chuck's soul, that did it for me. Prior to that, I had a sneaking feeling that santa wasn't real (Chuck on the decline), and then Rashad kicked open my parents' closet door and revealed all the presents marked "from Santa"
TwoFatNuts - Condit choosing not to fight Diaz and instead trying to out-point him. "Natural Born Killer" my ass...
You still mad bro?
BKViper -Fedor beating Nog.
No way this pudgy Russian takes out the best HW BJJer in MMA.
And Nog beating Sapp. Putting to rest any idea that enough size would overwhelm skill.
Agree with the first part. I was SURE that Nog was going to set things straight in the rematch and Emilenenko Fedor was a fluke champ.
I was shocked at how Nog's skill was negated by Sapp's size and prescription meds
SJCOTTON -When silva lost to bonnar via front kick to the face
I'm still trying to get over that
Fedor losing to Werdum.
it started the decline and more bothersome the disrespect of one of the all time greats
Bobby Lupo -El Ninja -
- Watching Frank Shamrock get owned by Renzo. I really thought Frank was going to roll through everyone but he just looked out of his league.
That was really weird. I was for Renzo 2000% as a fan, but I was worried about Frank being too well rounded and athletic. Then Renzo puts on a Hammer House worthy takedown clinic
wtf are you guys talking about?!?! Ya'll need to rewatch that fight again.
In chronological order-
Randy putting the breaks on the Vitor Belfort Phenom hype train
Honorable mention-Sakuraba handily beating Royce, but really Royce's aura wasn't shattered, but moreso passed over to Sakuraba.
Kevin Randleman knockout of K1 artist Mirko Cro Cop on the feet.
GSP getting knocked out....by a guy with 3 fights in 3 yrs, 1 win at ww, and zero ko's to his name prior.
Honorable mention#2-BJ Penn choking out Matt Hughes. The myth that Hughes was unbeatable at ww was broken, but Hughes' aura of awesomeness transferred over to Penn at that fight.
Pride press conference announcing they have been bought out by UFC.
Big Nog getting koed by Frank Mir
Fedor's single tap to Werdum
Big Nog getting submitted by Mir(one of the few times where myth was shattered but aura still passed on to winning opponent)
TwoFatNuts - Condit choosing not to fight Diaz and instead trying to out-point him. "Natural Born Killer" my ass...
It's only a matter of time before this comes up.
Werdum tapping Fedor
When Chael kicked Anderson's ass for 23 1/2 minutes and then tapped out
D241, good call. Randleman paved the way for Gonzaga.
What about traned fighter Benji Radach losing an MMA fight to a regular guy?
Bas Rutten looked pretty ordinary in his 2 UFC fights. They wanted to build the promotion around the guy-- "The World's Greatest Martial Artist", made him the logo, and he was laid on by Randleman for what felt like 7 years and got a dubious standup against TK.
No shame in losing to Werdum in a flash sub, getting abused by Bigfoot is another story.
Royce losing to Wallid and Fedor losing in Sambo, kind of set their MMA invincibility declines in motion, we just tried to ignore it.
BJ quitting against GSP in "To the death, or round 4" broke some fanboy hearts.
Not MMA, but Sapp beating Hoost in K-1 twice is too insane for words. If their very best loses twice to an untrained football player, what does that say about K-1 level striking?
Dave Terrell running into the Evan Tanner buzzsaw shattered a lot of dreams and projections.
Sperry-Zinoviev was huge too.
Fedor losing at the end of his career was a shame. Most guys look great for a few fights... maybe a few years... fedor was great for a decade.
Yet nontrained newbs shit all over the guy every chance they get because he lost a few fights.
Oh yeah- renzo koing oleg w an upkick was awesome.
Pete williams koing coleman.... zinoviev beating sperry was huge.
My ex wife and I split up the same day Liddell got laid to rest by Rashad. I was thinking watching the fights was gonna put me in a better mood. Didn't work out that way.
Machida getting Smacked around by Shogun hurt too.
The way the Cain vs Dos Santos fight turned out was bad. Not for who won, but for it being over so damn quick after all that buildup.
Humboldt - Vitor losing to Randy. He was unstoppable up until that fight.
Surprised this has taken so long to be mentioned, Vitor had hardly broke a sweat in his previous fights iirc
Hurrakayne -When Chael kicked Anderson's ass for 23 1/2 minutes and then tapped out

I know there's no shame in losing to Werdum in the way it happened, but Fedor never losing, despite being in difficult situations, had an aura. That was broken. Fedor's top notch skillset aura may have been taken down a peg or two after the bigfoot loss.
Royce losing to Wallid in my opinion wasn't as common knowledge to most unless you were Really into jiu jitsu back then. I don't doubt for one minute the Gracies tried to keep that one under wraps as much as possible.
