Scott Bessac OG MMA/Lion’s Den AMA

^meant to ask similar when Scott described Ken’s response to Hoffman being scripted. How much of the rivalry/hatred for Tito was real?

“BITCH MONKEY” is my all time favorite Ken trash talking quote.

Look at Ken’s wins vs Tank’s wins.

Tank brutally beat the guys who were over-matched against him – but he also lost to almost every good fighter he ever faced. He lost a decision to Scott Ferrozzo.
Ken on the other hand was at the top of the heap for a while, and near it for longer.

There’s always a punchers chance – but Ken by submission IMO, and it wouldn’t have taken too long.

From my outside perspective…
Ken/Tito was more about Ken viewing Tito as a disrespectful “kid” that needed tought a lesson – than anything personal like with Mark Hall or Don Frye. I guess dissing Ken’s LD guys could be personal… But Ken has also said in interviews that he would come up with reasons to hate people to get amped up for the fight.

Remember the Gay Mezger shirt…

The last book insinuates that Ken and his team pretty much knew he was going to lose to Tito.
Ken was a shadow of his former self and badly injured going in thatbfight. He needed he money, and beef sells tickets.

IMO if Ken and Tito had gotten into it right after the Mezger fight when the t-shirt confrontation happened – Ken would have mopped the floor with Tito.

To me, Ken was the type of guy that would challenge King Kong to a fight – get destroyed – then spend a year hyping the rematch.

It was part ego, part stubbornness, and part hype for money – IMHO.L

What was the funniest thing you saw backstage or at after fight parties ?

I support this question.

Let’s get some weird and/or funny stories that only an LD fighter would know!

Okay well at ufc3 my sister Katie who just died 2 months ago came out with Cimone 3 days before the fight like all wives. Fights are over. Back then the UFC was a spectacle, blood sport and were huge events.after the fights we’d go get changed and there would be a room to eat at a smorgasbord type thing then there was a vip party for fighters and movie stars, musicians just famous people. Well they gave us all tickets for both that cost like 50 to 100 bucks.but we never used them cuz we just got ushered in.I still have some of those tickets unused in perfect shape. So now I didn’t know this until Jeremy Couball who owns the mma museum told me but the director/producer John Milo’s who directed Conan the barbarian, produced patriot games with Harrison Ford and a ton of other movies and was an A list director had forgot to bring Leonardo Dicaparia’s and his buddy’s tickets. So Cimone, Katie and I are in line at the front about 30ft back Leo and pal are just standing up against the wall looking lost. Cimone goes to Leo hey weren’t you in the terminator? He sez yeah I was in the terminator. So I go hey lil man, shut the fuck up you were in like what’s eating Gilbert Grape stop posing. He just looked down kinda scared like I was gonna kick his ass.we went in he didn’t. My son sez oh man dad you should of just brought him up with you he would have been all excited probably ask to exchange phone numbers and you might still be friends. Nah I liked punking him for to my woman. Got a good one about John Wayne Bobbitt and Peter McMichael that Tyson had just murdered too

I get there he puts the tape in and the entire time all we did was laugh and cap on him. We thought it was hilarious some old outta shape slow dude would even send this to us. Turned it off forgot all about him til the UFC

just read this in kens latest book: *Rumors abounded of Dee Dee having a relationship with one of the older boys—and of Bob being caught in compromising positions with one of the male counselors. “He used to go to the bathhouses in San Francisco,” Ken says. “(Dee Dee) found the receipts. “Bob always had his favorite boy toys,” one Lion’s Den fighter says. “He only liked young, white, good looking kids. He took a special interest in them.”

After Dee Dee left, things changed dramatically between Ken and Bob. He was no longer one among many at the Ranch. He was Bob’s chosen one and their relationship became almost codependent at times, partners in a way and not just father and son.*

frank said bob way gay in some interview too
man did ken and frank have fucked up childhoods, both abused and molested
cant expect em to be normal adults

A really good boxing trainer told me once that a lot of top level athletes are extremely childish and selfish - their greatness is fueled by fear, and egoism. He said that these are the ones who have the most trouble when their careers end, and often are very bitter and petty

It could be that Ken fits that description

What do you remember about Ken’s “little” brother Robert? I cornered him in his only pro fight against Ryan Healy in Portland at the expo center back in the day. His real name was Robert Kilpatrick and I believe he and Ken had the same mom and same dad.

Not true he won a tournament in the IFC.

Ken’s older brother Robbie got the same chance he had, the opportunity to turn his circumstances around and invent a new life for himself at the Ranch. But unlike his younger sibling, he couldn’t figure out a way to leave his past behind.

In very short order, Robbie had gotten busted for drugs, tried to stab a kid at the home and gotten into a brutal fight with one of the counselors.

“When it was over, Robbie walked out,” Ken says. “The counselor, this big old white guy, didn’t. He’d beat the guy up. The door had a hole in it and I looked through it and the guy was lying on the floor.

“Robbie got kicked out. He had a chance. He screwed up a lot. There wasn’t anything I could do to help him."

Interesting, he fought under the name Robbie Shamrock in Portland but obviously things get confusing with the legal name changes and stuff. He preferred to be called Robbie but his name was Robert.

from the book it sounds like ken and rob had the same mom but probably different dads

Does Ken have any redeeming qualities? lol. Other than having a 500 lb bench at one time?
