(Serious) Are there any mma mysteries?

mbetz1981 -

The real mystery is how many "works" have Dan Severn and Shannon Ritch done in the name of MMA?

A fuck load. Funny guys like Severn and Shamrock get a pass for the shit too. P

Did Dana really try to fuck Frank Shamrocks wife? I need answers as that sounds too fucking funny lol

did Frank Dux really go undefeated in those bloodsport tournaments?

Every post UFC 40 Ken Shamrock fight seemed suspect.

Every Kimbo Slice fight looked crazy, even when Seth KO'd him with a jab on one leg.

There are a lot of fights that weren't on the level. There have been a lot of high profile dives. Does anybody think Brock Lesnar went into the Overeem fight with the intention of winning? He shut down Team Death Clutch and didn't even have a training camp. Did a 7-1 favorite Yves Edwards put himself into Mark Hominick's triangle?

anytime betting is involved, there comes the shenanigans. One of the greatest boxers ever, willie pep, was largely frozen out of boxing and is now almost completely forgotten due to speaking about all the people taking dives in high profile matches(including himself) in his heyday at the behest of promoters and plungers for cuts of the bookmakers winnings. There's been a lot of "helping the opponent to win", as the japanese say, in MMA ever since the TUF explosion and mainstream acceptance brought large amounts of money into the sport

If there are mysteries they are related to the behind the scenes of the various organizations.

For example, what really happened with Pride and organized crime?

Or, what did Dana and the Fertitta's know about licensing prior to buying the UFC  for a cool million dollars? And how much influence did their "Vegas connections" bring to get the sport licensed?

Rickson vs. Anjo isnĀ“t really a mystery but definately somehting many people want to see and talk about.

There is some other oldschool stuff I remember.

Ricco Chiparelli rolling with Rickson was kind of a mystery

Also Walt Bayless was kind of a mystery skillswise

A long time ago a member of Lions Den stole one of Ken Shamrock's jockstraps that he had framed after he fought at UFC 3, the story goes that on getting the item home the person in question opened his gym bag containing the jockstrap and instead of a jockstrap there was an entire world complete with atmosphere, continents, cities and populated by little people. He couldn't believe what he was seeing but the little people began to worship him as a god and as he was a narcissist he enjoyed the responsibility. It's a real mystery as to why anyone would steal a jockstrap that smelt that bad.

The mystery of what happened to Karimula Barkalaev after he had a brawl with Ricardo Arona during an ADCC grappling match in Abu Dhabi. Supposedly, since Barkalaev was employed by the Arab sheik who promoted the event, and the sheik saw the incident as an insult, be bad Barkalaev kidnapped and taught a lesson.

That was the rumor anyway, but no one seemed to want to confirm it, possibly because they were scared shitless.

Barkalaev was a beast and totally disappeared from the MMA world shortly after that. Itā€™s also rumored that he got killed by Chechyans during some conflict.

Can someone link the mr. Maeda thread. I've always wondered about that.

Why did Vitor let Jones out of a deep locked in armbar? Did Zuffa pay him to take a dive?

Jon Jones under the cage?

True. what makes it even more of a mind fuck is the gym bag in question was one of the old gracie academy ones you got as a freebie when ordering the entire gjj basics set, a world of shoot in a gjj universe

Why did Kongo keep clinching Cain every time he dropped or hurt him with punches? Makes zero sense, why was he slow dancing with a rocked Cain who he could have just finished off

Was EVAN TANNERā€™s foray into the dessert a Death Wish?

Why did RULON GARDNER only have 1 fight in PRIDE and never fight again?

What happened to that PRIDE fighter that went crazy after they shuttered the promotion and he did fight once but was acting weird, talking to himself, not totally engaging?

Were the PRIDE JAPAN last minute fight changes or last minute opponent announcements pre planned to mess with the fighters or given an opponent an advantageā€¦of just happentstance?

Does the Rickson Gracie/Yojo Anjo private fight video tape exist?

I seem to recall gordon saying he'd seen it

Yes.

My mistake.

I meant will it ever be released?

I wonder if gordon is related to todd hester who used to be the editor for grappling magazine and was an old school gracie moonie

Was it Anjo's request to not have the tape released?

Don't really know the story so well myself.

I always have a hard time fully believing anything the Gracies say.

Edited for typo.

I remember people close to Rickson who had seen it saying something along those lines of it being pretty fucking brutal (Rickson taped his knuckles up with duct tape to savagly beat the shit out of Anjo more).  By todays standards is would make Rickson look like a monster since the context would be lost on people not knowing/caring about the background

Its been years so my memory of it is fuzzy

Why did GSP really quit?

Donā€™t take this as the definitive answer to these questions, but this is what Iā€™ve heard.

Tanner was just known to do stuff like that. A buddy of his said after he died "If anyone else told me they'd be camping alone in Death Valley in the middle of summer, I'd be worried, but for Evan, that kind of thing was just normal." Plus, the offical version of events as recounted by investigators showed that he died while trying to find water or walk his way out of the desert. It certainly didn't seem like he went out there to die.

Rulon Gardner didnā€™t give a shit about MMA and just did that one fight for a payday. Dan Henderson said he barely trained for that right and never intended to make fighting a career.

For the third question, are you talking about Paulo Filho? He had some major emotional problems and an addiction to prescription drugs that pretty much derailed his career. Been in and out of rehab. He was undefeated until he had the episode in the Sonnen fight and was never the same again.

And last minute fight changes happen in MMA regularly still, but nothing would really surprise me when it comes to Pride and shadyness.
