rbl - Weak leg kicks are useless and a liability but hard, clean leg kicks from someone who's good at them will fuck you up. Randy Couture has talked about what Rizzo's leg kicks did to his leg, part of the muscle died. Guys who kick like that would do hundreds of kicks a day for years, plus have the experience to set up and land the kick, obviously converted wrestlers or BJJ guys in MMA are rarely going to develop that kind of power but that doesn't mean it's not possible.
I think this is true of kicks in general. For average people who train a few hours a week, boxing and wrestling/Judo are pretty good for developing a well-rounded skill set. Kicking well is hard to lear relative to using your hands. Even for pros, there's only so much time to train and unless you have been working on kicks for years, you may end up getting dumped, or dumping yourself. For all those gifs of effective low kicks, there are gifs of the kicks being countered with a straight punch and/or a takedown.

Persoally, I would rather watch Desmond Dekker throwing leg kicks than any high-caliber wrestler completing takedowns. Just like punches, its all about when you throw them. Prime example of bad judgement when throwing a kick is Stann vs Sonnen. Stann came out for round two and threw a lead body kick and got taken down. Just like everything in MMA, its all about decisions and timing.

Lol at the response to mine. I didnt say they didnt work. I see an awful lot of guys throw half hearted leg kicks that just get them jabbed in the face. If your gonna do it then use it stra tegically. Guys like Vera do it the right way. The body kick is underused imo.

Most superman punches are setup with some sort of leg kick or feint. It adds fatigue, and slows people down. How is it not effective?
Noone said they weren't effective at all, they're just not as effective as other strikes.
How many fights have been ended by leg kicks? How many fights have been ended by punching someone in the face? How many by head kick?
Guess which one is going to have the lowest number. That means they're secondary offense and not very effective.
