Taking my first BJJ class tomorrow

Aside from having a buddy that was a blue belt use me as a grappling dummy, I’ve never taken a class despite following the sport for well over 20 years. The stars just never aligned. Nervous and excited and hopefully I can make it a new hobby. I have no idea what to wear or bring or what. This is gonna be bad….

Just wear a tshirt and shorts. Some schools provide a gi with membership. A cup and a mouthpiece are good ideas too. Bring water because you’ll sweat your ass off.

If you roll, remember don’t be a spazz and act like you’re going for the world title. Nobody likes the spazz.

Enjoy and have fun; don’t take it too serious.

No you absolutely do not wear a cup lol

This is correct. It’s proper etiquette to stuff a rolled up, large tube sock inside a jock strap on your first day.

Awesome news brother congrats.

Don’t forget to stare deeply and hungrily into the eyes of everyone you roll with.

T shirt and shorts. Make sure the shorts have no zippers or anything. Have fun breathing hard with your boy.

You won’t make it through the warm ups. The shrimping across the mat will kill you.

Make sure to point out all of your injuries and no go areas before rolling. People love that. Have fun man.

If anyone acts strange or uppity say things like " you can put the devil on the other side and I will come out to fight "

wear a blue gi so the mats dont make marks all over yours

A lot of considerations that goes into it. First and most obvious is how competent and reputable is the instructor, is he on the mats teaching himself or does he have his blue belts teaching lots of classes, and does he come without the kiddie fiddler and Lloyd Irwin type drama attached. Then, you need the students and competitors you’ll spend most your time with to be good training partners and good sparring partners, and that I guess you’ll have to find out on your own.

If you’re someone with your life established and rooted in the area already, I’d say plan ahead and pick the school with decently ranked people also rooted in the area, because younger students often eventually leave for studies or work or whatever. On the other hand, if you yourself is likely to leave after a few years, maybe an affiliate makes it a little bit easier to pick your next school, but I think as long as the independent school has their rank from a decent lineage, it’d be no problem joining anywhere else. Might be easier than leaving an affiliate.
