Boxing is the only sport where it is argued by many that it was better in the past.
Might be able to lump judo and wrestling in there too, but they are not professional sports.

I thought Stevie Johnston would have beat Shane Mosley at lightweight. Stevie was a very underrated pure boxer.

92 Olympic class was real legit, even the guys who didn’t make the team like Johnston, Robert Allen etc had good pro careers

Absolutely. I think the 96 team was definitely better but it was the last great American team for boxing in the Olympics.

If you mention Stevenson, you also have to talk about Felix Savon . Most people don’t know there was actually a plan to have Stevenson fight a best of series with Ali (5 fights of three rounds) allowing Stevenson to retain his amateur status. Obviously it never came to fruition, partly because of the relationship between Cuba and the US in the 60s.

I loved Junior’s fights with Morales and especially Barrera. Without him beating MAB, Morales vs Barerra probably doesn’t happen and that’s one of my favorite series ever by far.
