There’s logic behind it.
The fan appreciation culture was completely different back then. Now, it’s all about padded undefeated records. A loss is shunned, regardless of the circumstances and performance in the loss.
Back then, fans shunned a boxer if he had a small record, not one with losses, but one with only a little fights. Back then boxers had to fight way more often which meant technique to hit and not get hit was greatly emphasized.
Great post! Completely accurate. Boxing changed a lot with Mike Tyson under Don King and the way Iron Mike was carefully navigated. Tyson was a big enough star that fans didn’t care who he was fighting, it was must see tv, even if the fight was over in the first round.
Speaking of Tyson, I’m convinced Tim Witherspoon beats any version of Mike. This video is Witherspoon breaking down Georgie Benton
Great list that I completely agree with.
Bob Foster was a bad mother fucker.
My best friends uncle fought him back in the day after his career was side tracked by a shot gun blast to the guts lol.
Foster doesn’t get the credit he deserves outside of the boxing nerds. Same with a lot of guys on that list IMO.
I really love YouTube because I can go down rabbit holes with fights. I recently started binging different fighter’s careers. One guy I thought a lot of was Jon Jon Molina. It’s a shame we don’t have this level in boxing anymore. Not superstar level a high level journeyman, able to give the best guys a tough fight.
YouTube is a fight fans dream
Azumah Nelson is understated too btw
