I was able to witness and train for a short time in Thailand as this age started to wane. Here is a good article and video on what it was and a great video of one of it’s top performers.
Trying to kick there head off while they are falling down is brutal
in for lady boys
There are several videos of the greatest fighters of the era on the youtube channel Muay Thai Scholar. They are the ones that are around 20 minutes. Yes, it is brutal to kick on the way down. Pride was more brutal with their soccer kicks. Great stuff.
Imagine if standup in MMA looked half as good as this.15 minutes of circling and throwing two kicks and a few punches gets pretty old.
You only get a very quick chance at it in Muay Thai though before the guy is grounded.
Some would say that is less brutal than following up with gnp
Sorry, I forgot to include the ‘in the flow’ fights. I’m not trying to make a point just share some really good stuff.
Subbed
Understand
But those Muay Thai guys shins are like trees
For later.
Still fucking brutal no doubt. Catching a fella with the knee on the way down from a trip is the money shot

Samart was definitely the most unique fighter in thailand. He blended his world championship boxing skills with his Muay Thai. There is an interview with him on the changes in scoring and how gambling has ruined the 5 round fight. He says in 5-10 years that the foreigners will be the top kickboxers in the world, mixing their boxing and muay thai.
Muay Thai has changed from those days. They used to come out and fight from round one and box more. Now the first two rounds are feeling out because gamblers want to see who looks stronger and three and four and five are the all out rounds. Punches only count if they stun a fighter or he is moved or knocked down. Staying busy like in boxing just doesn’t win.
It seems to me that so many MMA fights are contested on the feet looking for a KO. If they are basically trying to fight on their feet and looked half as good as these guys standing, MMA would be more entertaining. The are apples and oranges but damn if it isn’t entertaining. Like I said above the youtube channel Muay Thai Scholar has so many videos of older golden era fighters.
One FC makes their fights 3 rounds except for championships in their Super Series because their is no betting and that makes them have to fight from the go bell. With the 4 ounce gloves in the full MT rules, the Muay Mat ( the strong puncher and leg kicker ) have a better chance of winning than they would in Thailand. I also like the K-1 format fights with boxing gloves on… Glory is going into bankruptcy so who knows if we will see more Glory fights and they focus on dutch fighters, the second best nation in kickboxing imo. Glory focuses on Thais and Japanese fighters who have the longn lineage of kickboxing. Great stuff.
Great, beautiful and brutal art…
… Though we all know that Dave Le Duc would headbutt them into Bolivia.
:-/
ttt
Never understood these quotes. Same argument from boxing purist.
MMA is not muay thai or boxing. It is impossible to compare the striking of the sports.
