Is being blown out of proportion. He was just asking the ref to enforce the rules. When a mouthpiece comes out, it should be replaced when there is a break in the action. If there were no break in the action, he wouldn't have had time to look to the ref, signal timeout, and point to his mouthpiece. Also, if he were really rocked, Rob should've been on him and he wouldn't know where his mouthpiece was. He weathered the storm, and won the fight, fair and square IMO.
Agreed, it didn't change the outcome. He already recovered from being stunned and if the ref was good, he was probably going to stop the action right then anyways.
The Mazz would'a put it in anyways, the only reason we're talking about it was because Varner motioned for a TO
I completely agree, well said.
100% true
lol rob should have called timeout too
Yeah, if Varner instead just pointing to his mouth with his mouth open, it wouldn't even be worth a thread on this forum.
^^ exactly.
if my uncle had a pussy he would be my aunt
I thought he was still on queer street.
The next time a guy gets rocked he should spit that thing out and call a time out. But if it's a ref other than Mazagatti, chances are he won't get one. Steve sucks. Not just for this, but he really blows, just in general. He makes a lot of bonehead mistakes in there.
you are an idiot.
GSP4Prez is correct.
"I thought he was still on queer street."
If so, he would not have had the wherewithall to realize where his mouthpiece was on the canvas and point to it and call a time out.
Basically, Mazzagatti did a great job of reffing. The action had halted and Rob was no longer advancing. That's when the mouthpiece should be replaced. The problem lies with Varner calling the TO. It makes it look like Mazzagatti actually catered to Varner when that is not the case.
This same thing happens a lot when there is "sideline reffing" going on within the corners. I had an instance in a fight once where the action had stalled and I was about to stand the fighters up. Just at that time the guy on bottom's corner yelled "stand them up, ref!!!" and then I stood them up. Then I get complaints from the other corner that I stood them up because the other corner told me to... I now tell the cornermen to keep it shut as far as sideline reffing so that kind of thing is avoided in the future.
Bottom line is the ref is not listening to the corner reffing or the fighters calling "time out", he is just doing his job the best way possible. That's what Mazzagatti was doing. It's just unfortunate, in this case, that Varner called a TO right before it happened and that paints the whole thing in controversy.
That being said, great job by Varner. It was a hell of a performance overall. Very impressive.
Varner got his mouthpiece knocked out by a punch. He didn't spit it out on purpose to buy time. If guy spits mouthpiece out to get extra time he gets docked a point.
I dunno if anyone remembers but Varner did that against Hermes too, when he was clearly rocked.
I don't think it was that bad. The GG timeout/eyes thing on the other hands...
Diego Corrales spit out the mouthpiece intentionally twice when getting rocked and came back to win one of the best fights in the history of boxing...not technically the same thing, but pretty close. You do what you have to to win.
when in the the ring the ref tells u protec yourself at all times yes varner was winning the stand up but....... is he getting more money to do the refs job that is the refs job to call the timeout
I'm not sure where all the Varner bashing is coming from, he pushed the pace and pretty much dominated R1 and R2. Yes the TO was complete garbage, in that VArner called it and he was in deep trouble at the time. I think Mazz stopped the fight for too long. I say if you lose your mouth piece TO should be called and you can pick it up off the ground and put it in. None of this both fighters go to your corners and wash it off! How many people who train MMA or even football lose their mouth pieces and wash it off before putting it back in!?
If it's not allowed... Varner should have been penalized.
If it wasn't a problem at all you wouldn't have heard Mazz yelling at Varner telling him not to do that again.
