UFC plans 54 events in 2104, fans whine

<p>UFC held a press conference at 11 am ET in the MSG lobby to release a new report on the economic impact of MMA in NY. <a href="https://twitter.com/arielhelwani" target="_blank">Ariel Helwani</a> was live tweeting from the event.</p>
During the conference, ZUFFA CEO Lorenzo Fertitta mentioned that the UFC planned 54 shows in 2014, and that regulating MMA in New York state would generate $135,000,000.
Best line at the conference came from UFC middleweight champion Chris Weidman.
"Look into these hazel eyes, from one NYer to another, stop," said Weidman. "It's enough. Make it happen."
In a bizarre turn of events, some "fans" of the sport, led by the irascible CagePotato, then tweeted in opposition to the number of shows.
•Would any of you legitimately be interested in 54 UFC events per year? Basically one per week?
•Can't wait to see the MMA media market those cards as "PPV quality"...
•Seems like the UFC is in a race to the bottom as far as diluting their product as much as possible is concerned.
•And Dana White already complained that the roster was too big. Won't it have to expand even more to accommodate that many events per year?
•OK so think of the worst, bottom of the barrel fighter the UFC has. Now imagine tons of fight cards with fighters of that caliber on it.
•Of the 54 events next year, how many will be headlined by the IIir Latifis of the sport?
•Dana: We're putting on so many diluted cards that fans are losing interest. What's the plan? Lorenzo: Put on more cards.
•There are 2,430 games in an MLB regular season, and I don't care about that sport either.
•The UFC is going to learn the hard way that putting a mid-carder in the main event only makes them a main-eventer in a literal sense.
So UG, would any of you legitimately be interested in 54 UFC events per year? Basically one per week? If you were busy, what steps would you take to prevent the TV from taking you down and holding you in place while you watch?
Just so I'm clear UFC says they'll hold 54 events a year.
Fans and Cagepotato get concerned because they believe it will result in more weak cards instead of fewer quality cards.
UFC corrects itself, they wouldn't have that many cards in 1 year because... well most likely the cards would be too weak and not generate enough interest.
The fans reaction is considered "weird" despite being ultimately correct.

What they should do if they really did that many events, assuming most of them would be international reginal type events they should just not air them, dont stream or put them on tv.
Since they are so weak and not worth anyones time just dont show them but then of course all those who complain about too many cards will complain about not being able to see the watered down cards.
I am not sure abou this either. If at least half of them are overseas and at least 40 procent focus on localized talent then it might not be that bad.
It all comes down to how thin they are going to spread the champion and upper echelon fighters.
If the continue in current format though the better get use to a world with PPV income because how they are currently handling things is not doing there PPV numbers any favors.
Having said all that i will still watch most if not all ( even TUF china). But the state in with i am watching and the financial implications of this are both very uncertain.
I think "Cagepotato" raised some legit concerns in a antagonist manner!
There is no way in hell I could keep up with that many cards or even pretend that I would be interested in doing so. I can't even keep up as it is with all the cards they have.

I do the UFC as a reason to hang out with my friends 1 or 2 times a month. I am a fan most of the others are just interested in passing. So many cards will loose their interest and mess up the good thing I have going...

Sorry, did not mean to imply you did. Just was commenting on your argument. Rather than dilute the UFC cards, I would rather have a strong #2 in the market to serve the hardcore fans looking for more.
