UFC releases Vinny Magalhaes

According to the latest print edition of “The Wrestling Observer”, the UFC has decided to release Magalhaes mainly because the company is trying to build new contenders in each weight class.

Plus... Josh Burkman, Jason “Dooms” Day, Antonio Mendes and Jeremy Horn.

Is Junie still under contract? I hardly think he's going to be a contender anytime soon.

Would have liked to have seen more from him...his JJ is sick

Not sure, but Diamond Dave Kaplan is fighting in UFC 98...

"Whaaat, I thought he beat Elliot Marshall."

No Vinny lost by decision.

this is prob a good decision in the long run

He needs time to work on the rest of his game imo. He could very well be back.

Too bad about Burkman, I think he'll make his way back though.

I see it as a good thing for his career

The guy has world clas jiu jitsu. As his other skills become better and he becomes more of an MMA fighter, he will be able to fully utilize his jiu jitsu.

At this point, why should he be put in there against the top in the world? (UFC). He has a tremendous amount of potential, but not everyone is BJ Penn and can immedietly transfer their world class ground skills at the highest level of MMA.

Once Vinny gets 3+ wins in other orgs, over the next 1-2 years, he will become a much better fighter and can actually possibly be a top contender in the UFC. They need a strong jiu jitsu guy at 205 and he is the perfect fit. He just needs more expirience.

IrishFighter110 - Damn, with his level of bjj you expect great things.

maybe 10 years ago.  BJJ isn't MMA.  You need more than one dimension to be able to compete in the bigs these days, even if you're really good at your one dimension.

They should have kept Antonio Mendes and put him in against a striker.

That would be a barn burner that doesn't go to decision.

I think it will be good for Vinny to take some fights in smaller shows before stepping back up to the big stage. his ground game is sick, but IMO he looks like he could stand to spend some time improving his striking skills (and more importantly his ability to defend strikes on the ground) before trying to take on the upper echelon of fighters in his weight division.

Except for Mendes, all of those guys being cut have a win over a UFC fighter whose job is presumably still secure.

Magalhaes beat Soszynski

Burkman beat Josh Neer

Day beat Alan Belcher

Horn beat Chael Sonnen (3 times)

Anyway, I wouldn't cry for Vinny... Sengoku and DREAM have a fetish for BJJ and wrestling champions.

I think several of these guys will be back in the UFC with a few wins in other orgs. Burkman is a damn good fighter, but unfortunately he's just a gate kepper in a crowded welterweight division. He'll tear it up in the smaller shows and I have no doubts he'll be back in the UFC at some point, but never in title contention. Jeremy Horn is another solid veteran, but he doesn't have the athletic ability to back up his vast knowledge of the MMA game. He's very slow, isn't strong, and doens't have agility and that isn't going to get it done in the UFC these days, even if he knows a million more moves then everyone else. He's had a brilliant career though, but I can see him retiring from fighting and just teaching from now on, or at least that wouldn't surprise me. Magalhaes needs to get much better on the feet and get some experience is smaller shows and he could easily return.

dude needs to learn how to speak english

that's too bad, but with a skillset like his I'm sure we'll see him back in the spotlight soon.

ummmm...jason macdonald

with six months of sprawl training no one would touch vinny.
