UFC releases Vinny Magalhaes

IrishFighter110 - Damn, with his level of bjj you expect great things.

maybe 10 years ago.  BJJ isn't MMA.  You need more than one dimension to be able to compete in the bigs these days, even if you're really good at your one dimension.

tell that Demian Maia

I don't have to because Nate Marquardt will.

VectorWega - He did look good vs Eliot despite the bad game plan. However, I'm not sure that really tells us much about Vinny.  He obviously has great upside but still looks a long way from being competive in the LHW division.  He's now 2-4, and has lost his last 3 fights.  It would probably be good for him to go to the minor leagues and string some wins together against lesser competition.

What is this bad game plan? Please explain and break it down for me... (and I'll tell you why you're wrong)

fearOfABlackPlanet -  with six months of sprawl training no one would touch vinny.

When did Vinny lose from being taken down/put on his back?

H20 -  Vinny could have won that fight, he took Eliot down at will, immidate side control, immidate mount, landing big punches. and it happened more than once, by far the most action in the whole fight.

Only thing is, he stood and played pattycake with Eliot for 4 1/2 minutes each round, backing away from his kicks, both hardly doing a thing, then thought for some reason if he dominated Eliot the last 30 seconds of the rounds he would win?  Horrible gameplan but Rogan and Goldy even thought Vinny was going to get the decision.  I knew Eliot would get it, he controlled the standup the whole fight.

Have you ever fought a striker or someone who knew your gameplan was to take them down?

You can't just shoot in from across the cage every two mins, you have to cut them off and get them on a straight line. Tactically getting the takedown at the very end of the round is favourable in the judges eyes. You can't just shoot for a whole round, getting sprawled on and shaken off every half minute is going to go against you on the scorecards and you're going to be knackered after round 1.

There's far more tactically than punch or takedown or get the sub at the snap of your fingers.

I think Vinny fought a great tactical fight in that respect and I'm not the only one who gave him the win - sherdog's play-by-play also gave him the dec.

Terra  - Whaaat, I thought he beat Elliot Marshall. Ya know, I got the impression Dana never liked him. He disposed of Kristof like nothing. Seems like a really harsh move. Didn't he even take the Marshall fight on short notice??

Same, although with that first fight against Jules he was understandably cautious at first, imagine getting caught by that Jules guy - that would be the end of your career/job oppurtunites in the UFC right there. But Dana's analysis was - he's boring in the stand up dept.

sucks

Card - According to the latest print edition of “The Wrestling Observer”, the UFC has decided to release Magalhaes mainly because the company is trying to build new contenders in each weight class.

Plus... Josh Burkman, Jason “Dooms” Day, Antonio Mendes and Jeremy Horn.

To be fair, the other guys possibly aren't contenders but Vinny is, and to have such an advantage when it hits the mat is guarenteed to give great mis-match fights.

As said before, how many 'contenders' are going to be flooding in from new TUF series? A significant number of guys who bring nothing special or unique to the table (with some exceptions of course)

To take a fight with a fellow BJJ black belt on short notice and win (in many people's eyes), including absolute domination as soon as it hits the mat... it doesn't make sense for them to cut him

Alienation of the grappling fans in MMA - not everyone wants to see a random scrappy knockout

Mc6pack - if thats true its a shame, i think he has alot of potential, seems a little unfair especially seeing that he beat Krzysztof Soszynski in TUF 8 who now seems to have a solidified spot in UFC.

Protected booking right there. I hope they put Soszynski against Marshall next, but they won't... They'll prob give him a 'nice' match up

It's who you know isn't it

frederic - Will his ego ever recover is the question.

 THIS

He'll be back. He just needs some smaller shows to get some experience I think.

Hopefully so, it's a shame to see any elite grappling guys go, they are becoming a rare breed in the UFC

Vinicius has a bright future ahead...

Often the UFC lets guys go so they can build up their record and make some $ on smaller shows then they bring them back. That is what they are doing with Day.

Vinny should go to strikeforce

Totally agree with that. Vinny is still pretty young isn't he? About 25 years old?

Ecko Unltd -  I see it as a good thing for his career

The guy has world clas jiu jitsu. As his other skills become better and he becomes more of an MMA fighter, he will be able to fully utilize his jiu jitsu.

At this point, why should he be put in there against the top in the world? (UFC). He has a tremendous amount of potential, but not everyone is BJ Penn and can immedietly transfer their world class ground skills at the highest level of MMA.

Once Vinny gets 3+ wins in other orgs, over the next 1-2 years, he will become a much better fighter and can actually possibly be a top contender in the UFC. They need a strong jiu jitsu guy at 205 and he is the perfect fit. He just needs more expirience.

Yes, it's important the UFC build up contenders since the champs rarely fight in their weight classes.

LOL at bitching about TUFers flooding in and taking jobs away .... from other TUFers.

I like Vinny. He has a boatload of talent. But if it weren't for TUF, there is no way in hell he would be in the UFC. Let him go down to the regional circuit, polish up his skills, and earn his way back into the UFC.

The guy has a lot of work to do before he can be considered a contender. There is nothing wrong with letting him do that work outside of the UFC.

elliot didnt have a mark on him...vinny was busted up pretty good.

bullshit that he gets cut and krystoff, who he dispatched easily, has a UFC job.

Would people really rather see another decent-at-everything great at nothing fighter than someone with the ground skills of Vinny? What a load of shit, Vinny subbed Krystoff easily, is younger, has much more room to develop and improve, and is a hundred times more interesting to watch.
