What is embroidered on your belt?

shen - Dude...

I read kanji. I hate to break it to you, but that does not say "jiu jitsu"

It LITERALLY says: "I live to hold the gay men"

Sorry.

No wonder those creepy old Japanese guys were coming on to me at the last tournament. Thinking back - there were really metro looking shirtless Brazilians everywhere so it was either a BJJ tournament or a gay bar...

HoldYerGround -  The Kanji (Chinese characters) mean something like "White Ghost" in Chinese.

It's closer to White demon (or devil) in Japanese.

By the way, HoldYerGround - I asked a world renowned Bukkake expert if "white ghost" referred to anything and your mother said it didn't. Sorry :D

'How's my buttscooting?'

Nobody at my BJJ dojo has them embroidered.

A few people at my Judo Dojo do.

Never even though of gettin my own belt embroidered.

jiujitsujosh - My coach had my name embroidered on my purple belt . I thought that was pretty cool that he put the time into it .

You realize he dropped it off at a shop, paid a few dollars and then picked it up later? My sister in law is a professional embroiderer and I get stuff done all the time. Jackets ,hats, etc.

Lets be honest, that is a hell of a lot more steps his profesor took than most. For a purple belt no less. Very cool of him to do that imo.
It was me ;)

I do it for all of my students.  I started the tradition a few years ago, when my first student was promoted to purple, and I've been doing it every since.

I think it's a nice gesture on my part.  They've worked hard for the belt and put a lot of time into it...the least I can do is spend a little time and money making it truly personal.  I also like that all the belts match, which helps reinforce some of the "team" mentality.  And in practical terms, it helps the new white belts remember all the blue & purple belts' names. :)

^ That is awesome. I've never heard of any profesor doing something like that, but doing it for all of your students is amazing. Very cool.

Counterweight - Renzo has an embroidered one now too, it looks awesome.

Would you happen to have a picture?

kying418 - ^  That is such a nice gesture!

Dave "White Devil" Lewis(?)

I don't think you can put a the " on the ??

I've seen ones with the stripes made of white cloth and sewn onto the bar.

I have seen those too, and they look awesome

I have a pink belt with black writing. It says black belts are my bitches.

When I get to black I'll just swap the color scheme.

Especially for black belts, I think it would be a good idea to have your rank stripes embroidered onto your belt.

Some other martial arts do this. It's permanent --doesn't come off like tape. Never seen a BJJ guy who has done this though.

when de la riva was presented his 6th degree they gave him a belt with the stripes embroidered on

I guess I HAVE seen those --they do look great.

I was thinking more of the stripes themselves being embroidered white thread, similar to what is done in some other martial arts, because it is so durable for day-to-day training.

If you have the stripes sewn on, it probably isn't near as durable.

I was there when one of my coaches was promoted to a 3-stripe brown. One of the stripes fell off and it is like he hasn't even noticed, it has been gone for literally like 2 months and he doesn't seem to care.

It is normal to re-apply a stripe that came off during training right?

In all honesty he really does not seem to give half a shit.

Two of our purples presented a BADASS belt to our profesor. I've seen embroidered stripes which are cool but this belt had stripes sewn on. It looks very nice and clean. It looks very durable too, no doubt it will stay on. Eosin Panther black belt, it has a close up of the stripes and how its sewn.

Yeah, in judoland a lot of people have their names embroided on their belts, most times in their own language and occasionally in kanji as well.

The embroidered/sewn stripes sounds kind of cool. But all in all, I don't know that I really have an opinion on embroidery either way. I guess I never really saw the need to put my name on my belt, since there's not really a situation I could see misplacing it and having to jump through hoops to reclaim it that would necessitate my name making the process easier, or anything like that. But I suppose also, if I were ever presented with one of those swanky silk mizuno belts in the keepsake wooden boxes, I'd probably rethink the embroidery idea. I'd probably want to have the date of promotion/presentation embroidered as well. But as for wearing it day to day? Doubtful.

I don't remember for sure, but I think I got my Modern Arnis black belt from Eosin Panther.  It's hard to find those black belts with the red trim the entire length of the belt, and I remember they have one...

My original black belt in Japanese jujitsu says,"Hakko Ryu" in Japanese characters.

My original "master rank" belt says,"Hakko Ryu" in Japanese character and then as close to "hofa" in Kanji

BJJ black belt is not embroidered and still at bit crispy . . . ;)

Damn, just saw these pictures and reminded me of this thread. Just in case others wanted to see these, check it out. These Isami belts look incredible.

I have one of the Isami black belts and it is hands down the best belt I have owned. I got the kanji for Fudoshin, which means "immovable mind". While I say that it's partially meant to describe having a strong mind, it's also there because I have a big head. Phone Post
