WMMA Discussion Thread

Koga - Sunkist, in this thread 6 months ago you took the position that the UFC was not "invested" in WMMA and expressed the opinion that Tate would have more career opportunities if she went to Bellator.

In light of the success that Ronda, JJ, Tate, Holly, Paige, Valenta, Nunes and even Cyborg have had for the UFC in the last six months, and in view of the fiasco of Bellator's failed attempt to have its first WMMA title fight, please remain us what your rational was and whether your views have changed. If you don't mind me asking, With the exception of Cris, How are you measuring the success of the names you mentioned? If the UFC was totally invested in WMMA you And every other forum member would be able to name every single female fighter on the UFC roster. Jessica and Sara M are fighting tomorrow yet how many of the casual fans even know that?

I mentioned that Miesha would do well in Bellator because she was contemplating retirement because the UFC passed her over for the title shot. If you want to quote me, please provide accurate quotes.

Julia Budd was forced out of the title fight due to an injury. That doesn't mean that Bellator have abandoned plans for the title fight.

Ask the casual fan to name the top 10 in any division much less every fight in one division.

The UFC is the "Gold Standard in MMA" with the platform they have, a large majority of their roster male and female should be known to casuals. With the spotlight WMMA had in the UFC , they had the chance to capitalize but what is the likelihood that those at the top of the food chain realize that Larissa Pachecho is still under contract.

Awesome

UFC fighter Valentina Shevchenko's trainer, Pavel Fedotov, was shot and taken to the emergency room after a shootout at a chicken restaurant in the Chorrilos district of Lima, Peru. Shevchenko was also present at the establishment during the chaos. The news was reported on Monday by Peruvian news outlet El Comercio.

Three armed robbers allegedly entered the establishment Sunday night, taking 5,000 soles – about 1,486 U.S. dollars – from the cash register as well as cellphones, wallets and other belongings from the customers. The robbers also assaulted anyone who resisted the robbery, splitting open the heads of three customers, according to the report.

The robbery and the shootout were captured by security cameras. Shevchenko can be seen in the video rushing to her coach's aid after the shooting ceased.

When the robbers had completed the theft and were fleeing the scene, Fedotov, who was carrying a firearm, fired at the robbers, allegedly starting the shootout. According to witnesses, more than 15 shots were fired. One of the robbers, who hasn't been identified, died in the shooting just outside the restaurant, while the other two fled the scene on a motorcycle. Additionally, two of the customers were injured. Natalie Fiorella Vera Marcos is now safe after having a bullet removed from her. Fedotov, who was shot in the abdomen, is still at Casimiro Ulloa hospital.

The owner of the establishment said that this was the sixth time his restaurant has been robbed, and that's why he had security cameras installed.

Shevchenko (11-2) is currently scheduled to fight former UFC women's bantamweight champion Holly Holm in the main event of UFC on Fox 20 on July 23 in Chicago. Shevchenko, 28, is originally from Kyrgyzstan, but moved to Peru nearly a decade ago. The multi-time Muay Thai champion also does some training in Houston. Fedotov is her longtime coach, who moved with her and her sister Valentina to Peru in 2008.

McMann vs Eye up next! @FS1

UFC Fight Night 88 results: Sara McMann def. Jessica Eye via unanimous decision (30-27, 30-27, 30-27)

Jessica Eye is now 1-4-1 in the UFC. She mentioned that she is supportive of a FLW division for the females but wouldn't consider making the drop without an I.V. I am wondering if she still feels the same after this fight

I was on Eye's hype train and thought she would be the greatest next thing in the UFC.

She has been a big letdown, sadly... Phone Post 3.0
I too was on the hype train. Still a huge fan of hers (her snapchat is hilarious) but I really think that Tate fight took more out of her than even she realizes.

Before that fight she looked absolutely dominate against Leslie smith and had beaten Kaufman. Then Tate cracked her. She fought really quickly against Peña and was a bit gun shy and got taken down. Now dropping 2 straight and fighting an Olympic wrestler she was afraid to engage and get put on her back. She really does need a confidence booster. Phone Post 3.0

I am also a fan of hers but it is clear as day she has 0 takedown defense. Her main problem is that most fighters in female divisions are mainly grapplers. She has good enough sub defense to not get subbed but almost never has the ability to get up off her back. This fight was super hard to watch because it was clear she was too scared of the takedown to even attempt to strike with McMann. Eye can have exciting matches but they have to be against the right person. She must avoid grapplers like the plauge.

Shame there wasn't a third round. Amanda fought previously at FLW (I could be wrong but I believe she fought at BW as an amateur)and in my opinion is clearly big for the SW division. It will be interesting to see how much longer she can cut to 115

Ronda's return delayed due to knee surgery. Probably not back for MSG card. Looking at possible return on New Year's Eve card. Phone Post 3.0

Herd w/Colin Cowherd‏ @TheHerd

"I don't know when she's going to fight again." - @danawhite has an update on @RondaRousey. #TheHerd

I could be wrong but isn't this Ronda's second or third knee surgery? I hope she can make a full recovery

Will former women's bantamweight champion Ronda Rousey help make history when the UFC puts on its first event at Madison Square Garden in New York City in November? According to UFC President Dana White, she won't. In fact, she won't fight in November at all. White says Rousey recently had minor knee surgery and her timeline for a return is being pushed back.

"Ronda Rousey, I don't know," While told ESPN's Cari Champion on SportsCenter Thursday. "I'm hoping we're going to get Ronda back this year. She actually just had surgery yesterday on her knee. Nothing serious, just get in there, scope it and clean it out a little bit. She feels great. Her spirits are great. She's been training."

According to White, however, November is out of the question. Rousey was originally expected for UFC 200 in July, but pushed back her timeline to October or November due to other commitments. Now, White said, her return is looking more like end of 2016 or early 2017.

"If she fights, I'm hoping she fights in December. If not, then he would probably fight at the New Years show at the beginning of the year," White noted.

As for who she'll face, White has remained consistent that Rousey will receive an immediate title shot upon her return. "If Miehsa Tate's still the champion, she'll fight Miesha Tate. Whoever has the belt is who Ronda Rousey will fight."

White didn't rule out the possibility of Rousey facing Holly Holm, who took Rousey's belt in November of 2015, but said it would have to be a product of circumstance, not engineering.

"Injuries happen in this sport and a fight is made. Somebody falls out and somebody else slides in," he explained. "I'm not even saying Holly Holm couldn't be the champion by the time Ronda comes back. So, whoever holds that belt when Ronda's ready."
