Multiple time jiu-jitsu and grappling champion Mackenzie Dern has an opponent set for her mixed martial arts debut at Legacy FC 58 on July 22.
Dern, an ADCC 2015 winner and IBJJF world champion, will take on fellow MMA newcomer Kenia Rosas in a 115-pound fight, Legacy FC announced Thursday.
The event, scheduled for the Golden Nugget Hotel & Casino in Lake Charles, La., is headlined by Robert Drysdale. It will be his first fight since leaving the UFC, taking on Ryan Spann for the light heavyweight championship. In the co-main event, undefeated lightweight Oron Kahlon faces Josh Quayhagen.
The fight card, which airs live on AXSTV, also includes Ryan Hollis vs. Cody Williams, Jose Ceja vs. Trent Meaux, CJ Hancock vs. Brandon Allen, and Matt Mooney vs. Gage Duhon.
Kenia is 3-2 as an amatuer
CLOVIS, N.M. — Kenia Rosas’ first four amateur mixed martial arts fights were against opponents four, four, 10, and 15 years her senior.
The Wayland Baptist University freshman beat them all, complementing a perfect kickboxing record with a strong start to an amateur MMA career.
Saturday, against Randee Morales — a veteran that trains out of the famed Jackson-Winkeljohn camp in Albuquerque, New Mexico — the 18-year old Rosas showed her ability: she beat Morales while dealing with an illness in her last fight as an amateur ahead of her July professional debut.
Lubbock area MMA has seen recent prominence with Coronado graduate Derek Campos’ success in a high-profile Bellator win — it appears ready to continue with Rosas, a Clovis native that goes to school at Wayland Baptist University and trains at Plainview’s Xtreme Karate.
“I don’t really go in with a game plan because it doesn’t always work out “ Rosas said. “That’s my thinking. You can be like, ‘OK, I’m going to do this.’ But, then it goes to the ground. I’m ready for whatever comes my way, really.”
Against the 110-pound Morales, Rosas used a straight right hand to keep the bouncing, energetic Morales at bay. Rosas connected often with it and it allowed her to start working in kicks.
“We set that up so we could start checking that leg,” Team XTreme coach Tommy Alcozer Sr. said. “You can go look at (Morales’) leg. I’m sure it’s very purple. We were killing that leg. That’s one of the ways we slowed her down. She’s from a very good camp.”
Entering the fight, Rosas was 7-0 as a kickboxer, including bouts in both K1 and Legacy.
"We knew that (Rosas) was going to be tough," Joey Villasenor, a coach at Albuquerque's Jackson-Winklejohn and a retired MMA fighter, said. "With her kickboxing. I know how young she is. I knew coming into this fight that if we don't get the finish, we're going to have a hard time."
A win against a fighter with Morales’ pedigree — coming from the same gym that houses Holly Holm and Jon Jones, among other stars in the fight game — is important ahead of her July 22 professional debut on a Legacy card in Dallas against Mackenzie Dern, a jiu-jitsu standout that crossed over to MMA
"(Rosas) was more relaxed and more controlled," Villasenor said. "Two rounds, it would have been hard to pick who won those rounds. The third round is where the young lady, that's in my eyes what won her the fight."
Rosas looked stoic, almost entirely emotionless in the ring and wasn’t bouncing like a fighter normally would around the cage.
She took direct, calculated steps toward Morales, conserving her energy that has been mostly sapped from a cold — she started coughing the night before weigh-in and woke up the morning of the fight with no voice.
“I’ve been lifting and stuff and I bulked up to 135,” Rosas said. “It was 25 pounds that I had to cut for this fight in two weeks. I’ve never seen 110 in my life. It was really hard.”
After the fight, she teared up as she was mobbed in the cage inside the Clovis Civic Center by her team.
The victory for Rosas was also significant because of the Art of War card it took place on: both her father, Raul Rosas, and her cousin, Alberto Sanchez, also fought on the card.
Alberto Sanchez won, while Raul Rosas suffered a knockout loss. It was the third time that the father-daughter tandem attempted to fight on the same card. During the first two, one of their opponents pulled out.
“He’s the one that got me into fighting,” Rosas said of her father. “I really admire him.”
Everything about Rosas' climb toward professional MMA seems to have happened quickly while producing strong results. She started karate and jiu-jitsu in middle school and ran track in high school.
She never wrestled before coming to college and found the sport after being noticed by a Wayland Baptist coach while training for MMA in Plainview.
“I think it’s a little too soon,” Rosas said of turning professional. “I could have waited a little. But, God does everything for a reason. And I think he put that opportunity in my way for a reason.”

#UFC199 weigh-in results: Jessica Penne (115.5) vs. Jessica Andrade (115.5)
Jessica P said she was excusing herself from MMA to get "bigger" for the SW division because she is a ntaural AW. In my opinion and with respect, the extra weight looks really good on her

UFC 199 results: Jessica Andrade def. Jessica Penne via TKO (punches) - Round
When Jessica "Young Cyborg" Andrade announced her drop to 115 I mentioned that the SW division is turning into a murderers row. If I am not mistaken, Jessica A called out Carla Esparza...interesting fight.
With respect even though Jessica P has noticeably gained weight, in my opinion, AW is the weight class for her
Sunkist1207 -
Very happy for Andrade. Very disappointed in Penne.
She still doesn't counter punch, only covers.
No front kicks or leg kicks
Trying to "shoot doubles" on a shorter and stronger opponent, when you don't even have a wrestling background.
No attempts at upper body clinching.
Maybe she needs to go back to Invicta and fight in Atomweight.
Has more toughness than fight IQ.
Andrade vs Claudia/Joanna = good fights!
I am wondering if Pauline will be featured in an upcoming episide of Looking for a fight
In my opinion, If this young lady decides to make the transition from BJJ to MMA she will be a real threat and she is only 21 years old, She is being hailed as the next Gabi Garcia
