I have two comments about the Cris Santos vs Jan Finney stoppage:
This was a title fight and people often give fighters a bit more time to defend themselves. Most people think Edgar Maynard 2 was okay to continue in the first round, for example. Or Lesnar vs Carwin.
The people who are saying Winslow let the fight go too long and it went into the second round would be the same ones that would say she couldn't 'hack the violence in the sport' and she stopped it too early. It's a lose-lose situation for her... nothing she does is going to make the haters quit hating.
While I kind of appreciate some of the arguments against women refs I don't think it matters as much as some people are making out. 1)it's bullshit to say she can't ref because she doesn't have the experience. How you know how much experience she's had? Or are you assuming just because she's a woman she doesn't have any experience?
2) I don't think strength is a real indication of how good a referee someone is. I can't think of many cases, apart from perhaps the Daley incident, where a refs even used strength to end a match. More often than not it's just a matter of jumping in between. And if a fighter did decide to start pounding on the ref, you really think that just because they're bigger lavigne or mazzagatti would be fine? Also the fighters don't obey the rules because they respect the referee because they're a big bad man, they respect the rules because if they don't then they're out the fight and out of a job (obviously over simplified). I doubt just because the ref's got some mad baby making skills we're gonna see a massive increase in rule breaking.

^^^The real problem here is the OP seems to think the ref's main job is to manhandle the fighters when in fact 99% of a ref's job is watching the action carefully, understanding the rules, and applying them judiciously.

gaikokujin - Yeah we were joking watching the fights that she would flick the lights on and off to get the guys to stop. I don't think it is fair to her to say if one fighter goes crazy and won't stop or release a choke that she wouldn't be able to do much about it. She'd be required to put herself at risk to ensure the safety of the fighters if needs be and I think it is safe to assume she'd be willing. If that is diving between two fighters or w/e then I guess she'd have to.
Don't you think this scenario has been thought of? How long would it take 10 security guys (or whoever is responsible) to get from cage side and through the door if needed? 5 seconds?
I don't know a lot about the protocol, admittedly, but aren't there always people standing by cage side for just such a need?
Would skinny Yves Levign really mitigate additional damamge in those 5 seconds any better?
Hell, maybe having it be a woman would help. A fighter who got carried away might be less likely to smack a chick out of the way.
