10 second KO after 'glove touch' controversy

It's supposed to be a fight. It was, end of story.
One glove touch pre-fight is sufficient. Phone Post

This topic comes up every year or so. I am sick of all the glove taps and hugs. Touch at the face off and that's it.

SJCOTTON - She uses the same strategy I use in undisputed 3 Phone Post
Hahahaha same. Mostly because glove touching was cool and worked in ea MMA. It's clunky and weird in UFC 3 so why not get the jump on your opponent? :P

In real life though, this shit is low. Phone Post

for those who say it was a dick move, unwritten rule, unethical, classless etc ask yourselves this; why do you judge and criticise the person who came out fighting, when told to do so, at the beginning of the contest and not question the rationale behind the person offering their glove for some "unwritten rule"?

This is a sporting contest (that is completly governed by written rules) and when given the nature of offering your glove at the beginning of the round (the start of the fight may i remind you) opens you up to making a massive presumption of the mindset of your opponent as well as, by the offering of a less defended position, place yourself in jeopardy at losing the contest you may have taken weeks/months of training to show a sign of respect that you are offered the opportunity of doing so before (and usually after) the contest has begun. I again ask why defend the person doing this?

The fight started, and one lady did not do exactly what she was there to do, the other did. Unless the result was disqualified this is another clear cut case, and the ironing of the UG, where one woman seems to have more balls than a small collective of the UG- now isn't that a suprise?!

Timbo Slice - Anyone who's watched more that 5 fights should know that it's an unwritten rule about touching gloves as a sign of respect. Dirty move IMO.

Sure, but anyone who's watched 5 Sheila Gaff fights knows she always rushes her opponents swinging hard from the opening bell. She never goes to touch gloves at the start. Watch her last couple of fights.

No reason most of the people posting in here ought to know that, but if Maia had watched any footage of her opponent at all, she would have known not to try to touch gloves. I think this is sort of on Maia. Maybe refusing to touch gloves is disrespectful... but so is not doing any research on your opponent, especially when she is ranked in the top ten of your weight class (and there's plenty of footage of her floating around on youtube).

Hitman Rob - for those who say it was a dick move, unwritten rule, unethical, classless etc ask yourselves this; why do you judge and criticise the person who came out fighting, when told to do so, at the beginning of the contest and not question the rationale behind the person offering their glove for some "unwritten rule"?

You are 100% right, but I still don't like or respect what she did.

Normaly I think touch and go is pussy sportsmanship (read Floyd Mayweather) - but in this case Gaff wasn't being a bad sport.

She never indicated she wanted to touch gloves a 2nd time - she wasn't trying to be deceptive in order to gain an advantage.

The fight started and she just went to work !

No Foul !

Leigh - If you want to touch gloves once the bell has sounded, you should probably clear it with your opponent ahead of time

This. Gaff gave no indication that she would touch gloves - she was told to fight and she did.

Never saw the point in touching gloves.
Fucking come out swinging.

That being said, the camera angle was shitty,
I could not tell if the gal who won was holding her arm out to touch gloves or not.

No controversy
They touched gloves before the fight
The fight started
No need to make glove touches illegal
If they wanna do it, let them do it
If one doesn't wanna, they don't have to
When the fight is on, it's on Phone Post

In that short clip I saw nothing that seemed like Graff was coming out to touch gloves, she was in a fighting stance all the way in while the other one came out with outstretched arms. Nothing when they went back to their corners, the camera is focused on Maia with her arms out - once Graff is on the screen she is completely in a fighting stance.

Someone is coming at you with bad intentions, you don't have your hand out to shake it.

Liegh your opinion is shit. "Durr I have an opinion!"

duely noted.

Also glad you think I'm a badass because I do not sucker punch people.

Thacommish - i just think back to when paul kelly actually touched cowboys glove but attacked really soon after it. So soon he actually felt guilty about it all fight and right after took the opportunity to apologize for his actions, multiple times. If a fighter in the heat of the moment could understand that this was wrong and felt the need to apologize after, why the fuck is the ug defending this shit...

These are two completely different scenarios. If you agree to touch gloves you need to give your opponent time to reset after the touching of gloves. If there isn't an agreement to touch gloves then you fight when the ref tells you to.

Thacommish - what agreement? u make it sound like they sign a contract, 1 fighter holds his hand in the fucking air, and then looks at the other guy and nods, thats the agreement...

An agreement requires at least two parties. If I point to your car and then to a box of donuts that doesn't mean you and I have an agreement that you will give me your car in return for a box of donuts. You have to agree for it to be an agreement.

Fuck yeah.

1. Wait for silly opponent to approach to touch gloves.
2. Leaping left hook
3. Santos' Straight Right
4. ??????????
5. PROFIT

Oh, and striking immediately after the glove touch, like basically WHILE touching gloves is absolutely classless. Having said that, the fighters are instructed to protect themselves at all times....

Did old school wanderlei come out touching gloves? Fuck that touching glove shit if your gameplan is to coming out fighting to blitz why should u change your style cuz someone wants to be friendly. Phone Post

If, for example, Maia held up her hand and Gaff nodded that would be an agreement to touch gloves. But as far as I can see there was no agreement.

whether you agree with touching gloves again is irrelevant....Bullshiit move....IMHO

Blah blah blah Liegh you're in here trying to defend a sucker puncher. That's your shame, not mine.

"Durry I have an opinion!"

Wow, the justification is just perfect, flawless in fact.

Motherfucker.

Dirty Move Plain & Simple.....
