ASU drops mens Wrestling

didn't Don Frye wrestle at ASU?

The thing that drops the best at ASU is girl's panties.

Canario -

Actually, maybe someone on this thread will have some insight on this. Why hasn't NCAA promoted women's wrestling? Our university system in Canada has both men's and women's wrestling and the sport has only increased in popularity.

University of New Brunswick is dropping its wrestling program after this year. I'm surprised since they have an army guy that practices with the team who might be going to the Olympics in China.

I assume you mean Promise Mwenga, who won the 55 kg Greco Olympic Trials. He didn't make weight at the 1st Olympic Qualifying tournament.....not a good way to start the process to qualify for the Olympics.......but he still has one more chance.

Sucks to hear that UNB is dropping the program.

Unbelievable. ASU.... who's next. Friggin sucks.

PS.... basketball sukkks my johnson.

"i heard no notice to the athletes just your done"

It's college. I'm sure they told the athletes "you're done".

Canario -

Anyone supporting this trend, and then adding "I wrestled for x number of years" should have any and all affiliation with the sport of wrestling stripped immediately and never mentioned again.

Isn't too strange that the key term is "wrestled" and not "wrestle."

That's the fucking TRUTH! These people should be ashamed! Fuck!

And that's bad news to hear about Promise. He's a really good guy!

JInJackson - JoshuaResnick, I don't think you can be NAIA in only one sport. The entire university's sports program is either NCAA or NAIA. And a Pac-10 school like ASU isn't going to move to NAIA in football and basketball just to keep a wrestling program. It might make sense for some NCAA Division II and Division III schools to do that, but not big moneymakers in Division I.

I dunno about that.  North Carolina State competes in bowl games (football) every year, yet I think their basketball program usually is in the NAIA tourny.  Could be wrong, though...

This country is the Roman Empire and it's 400 AD...........

wtf is with these rascist pricks? wrestling can be exiting, and the ratings and $$$ tell us that tons of people enjoy watching 6'6" black guys (from the ghetto, of course) shooting a ball through a hoop.

dont bitch that your sport isnt as popular as another. stop being a hater/rascist/bigot/asshole/pedo

Can I get the mats at a fair price???

lol @ gamedogg looking for some swains on the cheap!

thats right game-dog, prosper off of others misfortunes :)

I like KneeBlock's idea of a "Grappling" program that oversees all wrestling/grappling styles - that'd be super-cool. Unfortunately I doubt this will ever come to fruition. So cool if it did!

 Title 9 is garbage.

a grappling program could exist on the college level, but not within the USOC. the overriding factor being the Ted Steven's Sport Act of 1972. This is what created individual National GOverning Bodies (NGB's) that are allowed only to control one single Olympic Event rather than the AAU, which at the time controlled dozens of Olympic Events.

Thus, no one NGB can controll more than one Olympic Sport, so USA Judo and USA Wrestling must remain seperate while they are combined in other countries. Thus, the combative sports of Judo and Wrestling are forced to compete for the same athletes (a battle that has obviously been won by wrestling in the USA) rather than to share talent and other resources.

I think Judo has it's own International Sanctioning Body.
They could have brought in other Grappling sports like FILA (Int.Wrestling Governing body)has done.

FILA is now trying to take in all Styles of Wrestling. They now sanction Grappling/Submission Wrestling, Sambo, Beach Wrestling and Pankration along with Freestyle and Greco Roman.

USA Wrestling oversees all these sports with the exception of Pankration.

Judo in the US is also seperate although USA Wrestling and USA Judo will hold a joint Olympic trials this year.

College/ High School Wrestling is an American Traditional Wrestling Style and does not fall under FILA or USA Wrestling but many of the top Wrestling Clubs in the US are associated with D-1 schools as/was one of the best clubs, Sunkist Kids, which was run out of ASU.

Didn't Kid Yamamoto and Drew Fickett also do ASU wrestling?

Its the female AD wants to be USC soo bad she cut 3 sports even though ASU is the largest school in the country under her leadership they have a relatively small athletic department, She cut 70 athletes from the wrestling, swimming, and tennis programs. She told them in a meeeting that their programs were done and they could transfer out if they wanted or ride out the scholarships they had.
