Justin Gaethje, Conor McGregor and Dustin Poirier. Some will say Dos Anjos, a guy with 13 losses.
Justin is a brawler, Conor a pure striker and Dustin also a striker. Conor is his best win IMO. Walking through Conors handfighting is the most impressive thing Iāve ever seen Khabib do.
Khabib has the weakest resume of anyone anyone has ever called GOAT. Except maybe for Usman.
Both are highly over-rated. Neither deserves to be called GOAT in my opinion. Its too soon. Atleast Usman hasnāt retired yet. Khabib quit far too early.
It would be like if Tyson retired before fighting Buster Douglas, or Conor retired before the first Nate Diaz fight or Fedor retired before going to Strikeforce.
Once Aldo loses again, and he will, people will forget this discussion. But in all fairness imagine if Aldo retired before the McGregor fight. His resume then was superior to Khabibs at that point.
Im not sure if anyone at 155 right now could beat Khabib. But I am sure his record is far too weak to be called the greatest of all time.
I have all the respect and admiration in the world for Aldo, but the convincing losses to Holloway stop me from calling him the greatest featherweight (to me, itās Max), never mind the all-time GOAT.
If the criteria is greatest run, he has a case, but is it really fair to overlook his losses post-McGregor by arbitrarily saying that he was out of his prime? Even now, heās only 35.
If Poirier wins on Saturday, there isnāt much of an argument to say that Khabib ducked any serious challengers before walking away.
I enjoy these debates, but I still canāt look beyond Jones and GSP.
By the time Khabib was walking through Conorās handfighting I think Conor was already basically gassed & lost most of his power he wouldāve had in the 1st rd. It was a mostly safe walk at that point.
Nobody is saying Aldo is the GOAT. We are saying he has a much better case than Khabib. Which is true.
Your argument has some serious flaws.
35 is old when youāre fighting at 145 and 135
Aldo became the champ when he was just 23. He defended his belt 9 times. The vast majority of his fights in Zuffa/WMG have been title fights or top 5 guys, even after he lost his belt at 145.
Your featherweight GOAT goes against your own logic. Max has lost twice to the current champ. He also has two losses to Dustin Poirier.
Khabibās last 3 fights are the only ones I would consider really impressive.
To me, the knock on Aldoās all-time status, which Van_Terminator is getting at, is that Aldo arguably had two fighters in his weight class who beat every version of him ā Max and Conor. Khabib, by contrast, has no 155 lber ever who has a serious shot at beating him. (I still think that the Frankie who ālostā to Benson the second time is his toughest all-time matchup).
Itās the same knock on Silvaās legacy compared to Jones and GSP. We always thought that a great offensive wrestler with good submission defense would be a nightmare for him, and then Chris Weidman came around.
There was no blueprint, by contrast, to GSP and Jones. For their time, they were completely untouchable.
(To be clear, I think Aldo is all-time underrated, and has a better legacy than Khabib. I said for years when people said that the top GOAT contenders were easily Fedor, GSP, Jones, Silva, and Mighty Mouse, that Aldo was missing from that list).
The absolute worst you can say is that he has four big names. Justin Gaethje, who was a legit number one contender. Dustin Porrier ā one of the most accomplished LWs of all-time. RDA, who had just hit his prime and was about to become champion. And Conor, a former champion.
I think Khabib is the best and greatest LW ever. I think he was the p4p king. And I think heās nowhere near the GOAT based on his resume. Aldo, Mighty Mouse, Fedor, Jones, and GSP are all ahead of him. And there are arguments for others, too.
But, Iāve never seen a fighter as GOOD as Khabib during his prime.
You make a strong case, and I would accept that Aldo had a better run; one of the best in the sportās history. I just think that Khabibās hugely dominant wins over Poirier, Gaethje and McGregor are enough to mitigate his lack of longevity.
Itās now become more interesting, though, as Oliveira smoking Poirier after running through two top opponents that Khabib never faced (Chandler and Ferguson) allows us to say that the former champ didnāt clean out the division after all.
On Holloway, whether itās fair or not, I donāt believe that he lost either of those fights against Volkanovski. To me, heās a champ without a belt, and I say he beats any version of Aldo at 145.
