Sonnen was able to land a few shots standing because he is arguably the best takedown artist in the UFC. Silva was concentrating his energy on stopping that which allowed Sonnen to change it up a few times and tag him.
Diaz isn't going to pressure the takedown, he is sure as shit not going to want to clinch with Silva. We've seen before that he doesn't necessasily handle leg kicks that well.
So he's going to have to stand and trade with the best striker in MMA without anything else to mix it up.
