I also think it’s awesome that Usyk won because even though a lot of us have been arguing for a long time that the notion that old time heavyweights couldn’t compete with the modern giants is nonsense, a lot of people were still completely enamored with the size of Fury and some of the other guys. Size is a factor, but at heavyweight, the rules are a little different. It’s still a distinct advantage, but the notion that Ali, Louis or Marciano couldn’t compete with modern fighters is ridiculous.

If you see in the footage above, Dempsey is not overpowered in the clinch and he was one of the hardest punchers ever.

You’re right, it was a clean 1-2 and Fury did walk into it bit. Still though, I think Fury’s punch resistance looked lower than what it used to be. Every time Usyk touched him his expression changed. He’s shown a better poker face in the past. I’m not making excuses for Fury, I just think it should be recognized that Fury lost a piece of himself fighting Wilder 3 times.

Would the result be any different if Fury had never fought Wilder? Impossible to say and irrelevant. The right man won the fight and Usyk has become the top pound for pound boxer with the win without a doubt. And I think he beats Fury in a rematch.

They don’t do the standing 8 count anymore in the pros. At least most places don’t.

The referee started counting because the ropes held Fury up from going to the ground. So it was immediately considered a knockdown at that point and the count starts.

You can wear out one body part faster than others. “Some miles” is an understatement. He’s been fighting his whole life, and he’s sparring and fighting heavyweights. That’s like 20+ years of heavy head trauma. That can def wear out your chin.

Fury has a ridiculous ability to recover. Everytime he has been dropped, he has recovered very well and never been hurt very long.

He was able to get back up from those Wilder shots that would have KO’d anyone else.

Also, Usyk isn’t the hardest hitter out there but he has power. That straight left is fast and hits hard. He had AJ wobbled and terrified of that straight left landing.

Absolutely not in the light most favorable to him. I wonder if both he and Fury both retired tomorrow who would be viewed more favorably. Usyk beat Joshua x 2, and Fury. Fury beat Wilder x2 (3) and Kilitchko.

Neither would make my top 10 all time and I don’t really see how anyone could rationally make an argument about top 5? Ali, Louis, Holyfield, Lewis, Rocky and Holmes all have significantly more impressive resumes. Wladmir Kilitchko had more longevity and was a 2 time champion but fought in a weak era. His best wins were against over the hill contenders and guys like McCline and Sam Peter. Frazier and Foreman both had relatively short reigns but more spectacular wins than either Fury or Usyk. Mike Tyson doesn’t have any wins as good as Kilitchko or Joshua on his resume imo but he was an undisputed champion and had 2 very impressive runs.

For those saying it was bullshit to give Fury the standing count, I disagree. Maybe other fighters would have been stopped, but this is a championship fight for all the marbles and I think the case is there that Fury, a proven champion who has gotten up off the deck before to draw (win) when no one believed it was possible, deserved the opportunity based on the standing 8 rule going in. I wouldn’t have had any heartache if the fight was stopped at that time, but I also don’t think it was awful to give a standing count there.

There’s a history of tough champions getting the benefit.

Vs Ezzard Charles, Rocky’s nose was split vertically down the center and cut over his eye in the 6t. After the 7th, the ref supposedly told Rocky between rounds that if anyone else were in the corner, he’d call it, but he was going to give Rocky one more round. Marciano went out and KO’d Charles with only a few seconds left in the round.

Ref took his sweet ass time letting him recover after the count, which is my main issue.
