Exclusive: Sunna Davidsdottir talks about signing to Invicta and training with McGregorExclusive: Sunna Davidsdottir talks about signing to Invicta and training with McGregor

When people think of talented MMA fighters from Iceland the name Gunnar Nelson generally springs to mind, but the new name on everyone’s lips is female fighter Sunna Davidsdottir who has recently signed with Invitca FC. Sunna is the 2015 – IMMAF European Amateur Flyweight Champion as well as a three time Icelandic BJJ champion.
Sunna will also become the first ever female Icelandic fighter to go professional, but how did Sunna`s journey begin?
`I have trained all kinds of sports since I was a kid. Football, Ice hockey, track & field, … even pole fitness. But it took about 3 seconds from when I entered a combat gym for the first time for me to fall in love with it. The primary reason for why I started in martial arts was because I felt that I needed to be able to defend myself.
I was working late nights in bars and and driving a cab at the time and I needed to be ready for anything that could happen. I did not realize however how much I would love it. I started off in Muay Thai but from there on I just went on to add various other combat sports to the mix. I am predominantly a striker but I feel very comfortable on the ground. I have a purple belt in BJJ and I aim to continue that journey along with improving my striking game`.
Sunna will also become the first Icelandic fighter to go professional and she is hoping it will open the door for more Icelandic females to also get their chance.
It feels surreal. I´ve been visualizing and dreaming about this for such a long time. Being the first Icelandic woman to take this step fills me with great pride and hopefully this can be a platform for other Viking women to follow. I have watched Invicta quite closely over the years. Chris Cyborg is probably my favorite female fighter in the world right now.
My friend Joanne “ JoJo” Calderwood who now is a UFC fighter used be signed with Invicta and she has praised the federation very highly. She feels that they treat their athletes very well and she looks back on her Invicta days with great pride and fulfilment. I could not possibly be happier at the moment and as they say, a happy fighter is a dangerous fighter`
Sunna fights out of the highly ranked Mjolnir gym in Iceland where she trains regularly with UFC welterweight Gunnar Nelson and occasionally UFC featherweight champion Conor McGregor and Sunna has relished training with the best in the world.
`I love it and feel grateful every day for being able to train with such elite fighters at Mjölnir MMA, the biggest MMA gym in Iceland and probably one of the biggest combat gym´s in the world. Gunnar has been a huge influence on me for most of my fighting career. He is a dear friend to me and has always been there for me to give advise and help out patching the holes in my game.
Conor McGregor, John Kavanagh and the Irish boys from SBG are always a blast and when they visit us or we visit them we usually the best training sessions possible. Recently retired UFC veteran Paddy Hoolohan has been a really great training partner for me. He is a tricky fighter, with a wealth of knowledge that he does not hold back on. On top of that he is a wonderful human being and a great friend`
All eyes of the MMA world were focused on Mjolnir recently when Conor McGregor refused to fulfill media obligations preferring to stay in Iceland and train. Sunna trained with McGregor on a daily basis and Sunna believes McGregor made the right decision.
`In training he is just the same old Conor. Focused, motivated and a really hard worker. Conor McGregor is as true a fighter as they come. A supremely talented athlete and big inspiration to me and all the others who have had the chance to train and work with him.
