Tru - Since when was marina with mellinium mma? She left both Glendale and csw? Never even heard about her training with bettis as her coach until yesterday. Also, normally the undercard opening fight does not start shit with the main event champion. Sunkist, what's the word on the camp switch? Mellinium is probably 60 miles from Los Angeles. JustAnotherMMAFan,

I agree, it would be interesting to know what lead to the decision for the ladies to leave GFC even though in my opinion, it is the right decision. I remember reading here that Edmond initially didn't want to train Ronda so maybe he can be difficult? I am positive that Jessamyn and Shayna live with Josh and Colleen. From the interview I posted above, Marina is living in Rancho Cucamunga and has been for a while.

Pure speculation, but I'm guessing the girls loved it in the TUF house when Ronda and her coaches were putting all their efforts into those girls winning.
I think when they popped back into real life and found that Ronda was focused on Ronda winning and Edmond was focused on Ronda winning and they were serving as sparring partners to aid in that goal more than anything else, they decided to go elsewhere.

I don't think Shayna or Jess have commented on the move but Marina made a few comments in her pre-fight interviews.

"I just didn’t put myself in the right environment. You have to surround yourself with people who recognize the goal you want to achieve."

"I was turning into such a people-pleaser that I was sacrificing everything within myself to make one person happy. And I was trying to fill a happy tank that was unplugged" (The "one person" she was referring to was an ex-boyfriend, but the comment likely goes beyond that)

Invictafc 13 Results for anyone who missed an awesome card!

Cris Cyborg def. Faith Van Duin via TKO at :45 of R1

Tonya Evinger def. Irena Aldana via TKO (punches) at 4:38 of R4

Ayaka Hamasaki def. Herica Tiburcio via split decision (48-47, 47-48, 49-46)

Pannie Kianzad def. Jessica-Rose Clark via unanimous decision (30-27, 30-27, 30-27)

Amber Brown def. Catherine Costigan via submission (rear-naked choke) at 3:37 of R1

Jamie Moyle def. Amy Montenegro via split decision (29-28, 28-29, 29-28)

Amber Leibrock def. Marina Shafir via TKO (punches) at :37 of R1

Thoughts on the card?

In my opinion the biggest upsets were

Amber Leibrock def. Marina Shafir via TKO (punches) at :37 of R1

Amber Brown def. Catherine Costigan via submission (rear-naked choke) at 3:37 of R1

and to some extent

Tonya Evinger def. Irena Aldana via TKO (punches) at 4:38 of R4

For those who follow this thread, I posted an interview were Amber said everyone was overlooking her and it seems as though she was right. Where does Marina go from here?

Irene proved that she has a lot of heart but in my opinon, Tonya exposed the holes in her ground game. In my opinion, if Irene can get some good grappling training at another gym, she will def put the 135lb division on notice, WIll this loss to Tonya affect her potential move to the UFC? Another forum member mentioned a while back that Alexa and Irene come as a "package" deal so maybe this loss doesnt really matter?. Tonya mentioned in her pre fight media scrum that she wouldnt be interested in going to the UFC because she knows she will not be as acive as she is in Invicta, in your opinion, do you think that will change?

I honestly didnt expect Amber to defeat Catherine. There was alot of hype around Catherine going into this fight but unfortunately things didnt go well for Catherine last night. In my opinion she is a great fighter and with more training can do really well. The two Ambers where definately the dark horses on this card

What say you?
Where does Marina go from here?

Good question.

Amanda Bell, who beat her one year ago, was soundly defeated by Cyborg's last two opponents.

She took almost a year off after her brutal k.o. at the hands of Amanda Bell, just to be k.o.ed as fast by a noob no one had ever heard of.

You can't train to have a chin. Some people have it. Others don't.

It's a weakness. She can't strike for a certain amount of time, or she will always be on the verge of another k.o.

At this point, in her career, she would be destroyed by the likes of Marloes Coenen or even Julia Budd.

She's unranked, she is 1-2, and problably is the featherweight who has been k.o.ed twice the fastest ever. Phone Post 3.0

Smithsamman,

Thank you and please accept a vote up for posting the interview links and quotes. I agree with your opinion about the dynamics of Glendale Fight Club post TUF. I also believe that when Maria suffered her first loss, Edmond lost interest. I do recall him saying that Marina would K.O Cris Cyborg

@QoSBaszler It should be a rule that you're not allowed to make fun of people that KO'd you.

So do I assume Shayna asked for her release to go back to Invicta or to make the full time move to Pro Wrestling?

Being t.k.oed by a leg kick was planned?

Hey JustAnotherMMAFan,

I totally agree with you. I dont like to see people give up on their dreams but In my opinon, Marina should think about making the transition to grappling tournaments since she has issues with taking punches. Her weakness has been exposed so going forward, every opponent will  capitalize off that. I dont understand why Marina wanted to stand when she should have tried to use her Judo  It would be a great thing if she humbled herself and went to train with Cris and Jason Parillo. Who knows..after Bethe, Ronda may think of going up to 145 just for Amber

I was thinking the same... She should train with Cyborg and Parrillo. Phone Post 3.0

JustAnotherMMAFan,

Yes,  Ive read several tweets mocking her and that tweet she posted doesnt help the situation either. I appreciate that Marina is upset but In my opinoin, she should try a more humble approach and not be so defensive.

Angela Hill posted this on Instagram after hearing that Bec Rawling pulling out of the fight with Joanna Calderwood- What say you? In my opinion, Joanna would win if they kept the fight standing

'So tell me, how in gods name is a commercial flop like Cyborg, going to take a 600k plus PPV draw Rousey, towards the 1M bracket, and in to the ludicrous 2M PPV range?'

I think it was Dana White who said that - not Sunkist. Cyborg's drawing power on her own certainly isn't on the same level as Ronda or Gina's. But Cyborg was Gina's biggest fight and I think it' pretty clear she would also be Ronda's biggest fight.

As for why Cyborg is paid so much my guess is at least in part it's because Gina is still out there. If Gina came back Bellator could create a women's 145 lbs division to rival the UFC's 135 lbs division.

By saying the biggest fight, I get the feeling people mean toughest handicap; with the idea Gina's FREE tv fight vs Cyborg, made Cyborg a legitimate future equivalent exchange, for enhancing the PPV buy rates for Rousey in the UFC...HUH?

A 1M PPV buy rate isn't going to come down to Cyborg. Sorry, it's just not. Those kinds of numbers require more than the MMA bubbles belief in their sport niche stars being huge; it genuinely requires mainstream interest, serious marketing, and personalities who draw attention.

So with that in mind, saying Rousey vs Cyborg does 1M+ PPV buys, is just saying Rousey on her own's done 1M+ PPV buys; this because outside of our niche little world, there's absolutely zero evidence that Cyborg, in or outside the cage, is appealing to a mainstream audience, or can be marketed accordingly.

The last paragraph, where you believe the prospect of Carano vs Cyborg II, makes Bellator's new female 145, a potential rival to UFC's 135, LOL.

HUH indeed. Your first sentence is so muddled I doubt even you understand itYou seem to be trolling this thread and I don't want to give you too much attention so I'll just say:

  1. 'Biggest fight' means most viewership. Gina's biggest fight was against Cyborg. Of her realistic opponents Ronda's biggest fight would be against Cyborg.

  2. Regarding the last paragraph if Gina were to return that would generate a lot of interest and Coker has shown that he knows how to market fighters with name recognition (regardless of their current skill level).

Yesterday at the UFC fan exp Q and A session, Dana said that Cyborg vs Tate is not happening. If Cris has her next  non title fight at 140, who do you see stepping up and taking that challenge? If it is indeed Miesha, this puts  pressure on Ronda and I am confident that they will face each other at UFC 200 next July. In my opinion fighting Cris will be a major payday for Miesha and a great way for the casual UFC fans to be introduced to Cris

What say you?

She's, by definition, a hater and a keyboard warrior herself. She calls out Cyborg for a fight a year and a half in the future. Then, she needs another year and a half. Finally, when she's signed to Invicta, she needs to make a name before taking the fight.

She calls out someone on the Internet, who she got no real intention to fight. Phone Post 3.0

In her post fight interview, Amber Leibrock who beat Marina Shafir said something along the lines of, "the 145lb division has a new problem and its me!" With respect, Amber reminds me of Veronica Rothenhaulser. Veronica impressed everyone with her debut KO of Katalina Malungahu.  I recall reading that Veronica would be the one to detrone Cris and in an interview,  Veronica said she has the most power and aggresion in WMMA however Veronica was defeated by Charmaine Tweet. Amber is nowhere near fighting Cris so who would you like to see her face next? I wouldnt mind seeing Amber face Charmaine Tweet even though Charmaine is trying to drop to 135 or Amanda Bell
