WMMA Discussion Thread

Karnak - Sunkist1207

You want other women to get PVZ level of attention..? So basically you want the MMA community to make increasingly patronising comments on how good more women could be, while celebrating non threatening in cage female talent, and banal out of cage personality? LOL....

Seriously though, we all know much of the so called PVZ "It Factor" is predicated on highly simplistic factors, that will likely take a significant amount of damage at the first sign of a genuine top ten contender; making the PVZ route to success nothing more than a piece of super short term opportunism on the part of Zuffa.

I agree that more of the ELITE women should be on main cards though, and personally found it highly disappointing to see Herrig vs PVZ as the first 115 fight on main card Fox... but again, short term decisions like this will only blow up in the face of Zuffa anyway, as many smaller elite guys also found themselves on the short end of that bullshit decision too.

On the nature of promotional work, I always find it interesting that MMA fans can't accept that some fighters are simply better at this aspect of the game than others. You give some fighters mic time with the UFC, and other than the hardcore MMA fan base, your not going to see much interest in what they have to offer anybody.

This isn't mine or anybody else's attempt to belittle the character of any particular athlete either, but the market always speaks for it's self on this, giving us a large amount of MMA fans simply interested the way PVZ looks, or the way a McGreggor talks and fights, while everybody outside of the bubble enjoy the way a Rousey does all three.

For being unapologetically brazen, Rousey's pretty much loathed within the MMA fan bubble, but has instead struck a chord with a unexpected large mainstream audience; and it's inside this MMA vacuum of loathing which Rousey's now left behind, that people expect Zuffa to promote other highly financially viable women... huh?

At this point in time, the women of the UFC continue to be a minority the MMA audience simply tolerate right now, only accepting them on the very terms Rousey won't adhere to. So I hear the points about Rousey's prominence being unfair on others, but what are the other women doing beyond the things we already know don't work, to be on the same level or above the men of UFC, let alone it's biggest stars..?

Karnak,

Pardon me but I think you are misunderstanding my point. Ideally I would hope that all the women in the 115 and 135 division be offered the opportunities which are presented to Miesha and Ronda in terms of promoting the UFC in the media. Allowing the casual UFC fans to get to know them. How they are recieved by some MMA fans is some, not all. If Paige does lose the fact still remains that she was given the opportunity that others have not been given even though they rank higher than she is and, I say this with respect are more evolved with their Maritial Arts. If it is not Paige, it could be Rose, it could be Michelle it could be Alexa but in my opinon, and I say this respectfully,  the formula is still the same.

I totally agree with you. However, that doesnt negate from the fact that some fighters are not again even being offered an opportunity to do any of that. That is the point I have been making. Mighty Mouse Johnson is a dominant champion, has almost cleared out his division but how often is Mouse in Vegas or in Europe promoting a fight card? Sarah Kaufmann interviews very well, has been in the sport for a long time, why is she not in Brazil promoting a UFC card? Casual UFC fans with respect, are going to like what is heavily promoted in front of them. Why not use that opportunity to promote the company as a whole as opposed to just a few?

I respectfully disagree with your point that Ronda is loathed, if she can pull in 500+ PPVs with fans disliking her then I would hate to see the PPVs if fans actually did like her.

You make a great point, we dont know what is going on behind the scenes and I am not sure what you are referring to in terms of " beyond the things we already know don't work" but again it doesnt negate from the fact that the UFC have 50+ female fighters on their roster but we only see two constantly promoting the company. I doubt very much that 48+ female fighters are just sitting at home not wanting to advance in their careers.

Respectfully, Sunkist, I think the UFC is right to only push certain female fighters. They have a good idea who is going to generate excitement and draw new fans and they spend the allocated "WMMA marketing money" on those women.

I'm a fan of Sara Kaufman, she throws down. However if Dave Scholler, the Marketing VP for the UFC spends one dime marketing her he could have spent on Waterson or VanZant... he'd be bad at his job.

Meet Nicdali "The Night Queen" Rivera Calenoc, Miesha Tates best friend and an Atomweight fighter with a record of 8-8. Nicdali was signed to Invicta but after a brief retirement, is back in action moving up to the straw weight division to meet Sharita Fane Davis  0-1 (3-6 Amateur)tomorrow at XFL Xtreme fight night 23

SeverianB,

I appreciate your honesty but I respectfully disagree with your opinon . The formula you described is pretty much the blueprint right now which,  in my opinion is unfortunate.

The fighters that the UFC are not promoting, what do you think they should do to become "UFC Marketable"? shouldnt talent be enough? Why should WMMA be held to a different set of rules? What happens if  Waterson and Vanzant lose to opponents who are not "UFC Marketable"?

Invicta resigned Simona Soukupova to the Atomweight  division. 38 year old Simona currently 4-3  and ready to jump back in

So, I was going to put this in another thread where someone said you could book every ranked female fighter in the UFC on a PPV and still not break 100k, and I sort of took that as an open challenge. I'm not interested in responding to a 6-day old comment and reviving that thread, but I wanted to put this somewhere regardless.

Challenge: Book an all-female UFC PPV without Ronda Rousey, that would probably break 100k.

Note: I'm gonna leave Correia off this too, to make it feasible even with the upcoming title fight intact.

Allowances:
-PPV is 5 hours with 9 main-card fights (and 6 prelim fights).
-Event is done in a place with a lenient AC to allow for a miniature one-night tournament (total fighting time for participants would be up to 30 minutes, with 3.5+ hours between fights).
-Two fighters who aren't publicly on the roster but will be pretty soon are included (Jessica Aguilar and Alexa Grasso, the latter on the Prelims).
-Two new weight classes introduced, albeit limited to people who are capable of fighting at those weights (and in most cases already have).

Ronda-less UFC PPV

Main Card

-Inaugural UFC Flyweight Championship: Winner of Miesha/Andrade vs. Winner of Carmouche/Pena (3 x 5 minute rounds)

-Strawweight Championship: Joanna Champion Jedzejczyk http://i.imgur.com/WxGIivV.png vs. Jessica Aguilar http://i.imgur.com/t33lQi3.pnghttp://i.imgur.com/bFNg4I7.png

-Bantamweight Title Eliminator: Holly Holm http://i.imgur.com/t33lQi3.png vs. Jessica Eye http://i.imgur.com/t33lQi3.png

-Bantamweight fight: Cat Zingano http://i.imgur.com/t33lQi3.png vs. Marion Reneau http://i.imgur.com/t33lQi3.png

-Atomweight Title Tournament Quarterfinal: Thug Rose http://i.imgur.com/t33lQi3.pnghttp://i.imgur.com/5cgPELk.png vs. Paige VanZant http://i.imgur.com/t33lQi3.png

-Atomweight Title Tournament Quarterfinal: Tecia Torres http://i.imgur.com/t33lQi3.png vs. Carla Esparza http://i.imgur.com/t33lQi3.png

-Bantamweight fight: Sara McMann http://i.imgur.com/t33lQi3.png vs. Amanda Nunes http://i.imgur.com/a3p69Va.png

-Flyweight Title Tournament Semifinal: Miesha Tate http://i.imgur.com/t33lQi3.png vs. Jessica Andrade http://i.imgur.com/a3p69Va.png (3 x 5 min)

-Flyweight Title Tournament Semifinal: Liz Carmouche http://i.imgur.com/t33lQi3.png vs. Julianna Pena http://i.imgur.com/t33lQi3.png (3 x 5 min)

Prelims

-Strawweight Title Eliminator: Claudia Gadelha http://i.imgur.com/a3p69Va.png vs. Maryna Moroz http://i.imgur.com/xaAgx4m.png

-Flyweight Title Tournament Semifinal Alternate: Rin Nakai http://i.imgur.com/ynhSoqQ.png vs. Leslie Smith http://i.imgur.com/t33lQi3.png (3 x 5 min)

-Atomweight Title Tournament Quarterfinal: Michelle Waterson http://i.imgur.com/t33lQi3.png vs. Jessica Penne http://i.imgur.com/t33lQi3.png

-Atomweight Title Tournament Quarterfinal: Alex Chambers http://i.imgur.com/L94unOF.png vs. Seo Hee Ham

-Strawweight fight: Bec Rawlings http://i.imgur.com/L94unOF.png vs. Joanne Calderwood http://i.imgur.com/FzGXesD.png

-Strawweight fight: Alexa Grasso http://i.imgur.com/bFNg4I7.png vs. Felice Herrig http://i.imgur.com/t33lQi3.png

On the strength of Miesha Tate, Cat Zingano, Julianna Pena, Paige VanZant, Thug Rose, Joanna Champion, and Holly Holm, with a deep supporting cast, and the novelty of a one-night tournament, I think this would, in fact, break 100,000 buys. But fuck if I know. I just thought it was an interesting challenge.

Chromium,

This is an awesome idea. Please accept a vote up for your efforts in putting this together.  Hopefully the matchmaking fairiies are viewing this thread and get some ideas :)

In my opinion if the IFC want to prove that they are really invested in WMMA, they would cross promote with Invicta and hold a UFC vs Invicta for bragging rights event. I do not have time right now but later, I will post my  suggestions for an all female card!

Marloes Conen in Glamour magazine :)

Miesha and Duda Yankovich having some fun in Vegas. Duda is a  mixed martial artist  1-3 and a former boxing champ 15-4. For those who who are not aware, last year Duda had a stroke in the Team Nogueria gyn where she trains but fortunately Big Nog was around and helped save her life.. The great news is that Duda has been cleared to fight again!

Hello Moderators viewing this thread :)

Can I humbly request for this thread to be stickied? We have already had one fabulous Pro Fighter post here and hopefully if this thread is stickied,  other fighters will  participate in the discussions.  For your time, please help yourself to a cupcake. Thanks in advance  :)

Karnak - "Casual UFC fans with respect, are going to like what is heavily promoted in front of them" Wowowowow now lol... I've honestly felt most people in the MMA bubble genuinely believed this, but to finally hear it in this WMMA context now, doesn't make it sound any less goofy lol.

Yes, we all know the casual fan base will be pretty uneducated on all things related to elite level MMA/fight sports, but this huge audience also knows what it likes, and will react in highly dismissive fashion if their spoon fed pedestrian garbage their not even willing to tolerate.

This is why for all his skill in side the cage, most of the massive potential casual audience for MMA, will never gravitate to a less than uninspiring persona like a Mighty Mouse; and unfortunately many more of the fighters within the UFC's male divisions.

And this may be something fans of WMMA aren't willing to accept, but in a MMA bubble female fighters are at best still widely tolerated, why would a Sarah Kaufmann be given a platform as big, or bigger, than a burgeoning male athlete in the sports biggest promotion?

You say there's 50+ of a niche minority athlete in the UFC now. But they all compete in the increasingly large shadow of a promotional freak, who's managed to carve out a new audience for the sport; a new audience by the way, that many hard core fans otherwise felt impossible to access for the biggest of male stars of the UFC.

So how much viability do you think the UFC now get out of a underwhelming Holm being the co main of a card like UFC 184? How much do you think the UFC benefit from giving Correia her time in the sun, seeing her constantly attempting to piss off Rousey? I could bring up other examples too, but beyond simply being women in a majority male sport, non of these ladies are exactly doing a great job with the little they do get to showcase if they are truly valuable commodities for the wider world of UFC business.

Plus Rousey's PPV drawing power ISN'T due to the hardcore MMA audience loving her lol. If you think it is, your can't be listening/paying attention to the MMA media's regular confusion as to why somebody who produces such low traffic for much of their fight night traffic, can go and on to produce such impressive numbers for what many MMA hardcores felt should have been a garbage event in UFC 184.

You may say otherwise, but I'm pretty sure the MMA bubble still loathes Rousey's growing prominence, and at best tolerate her like they do the other women in the UFC. So Rousey not indulging the MMA bubble, seems to make her both infinitely more popular within another/less reliable fan base, but constantly held in disdain by the same hardcore PVZ loving MMA audience, you hope other women in the UFC can attract some day soon lol.

Karnak,

With all due respect, we appear to be repeating ourselves and going around in circles. Ronda has great drawing power for the UFC and that is not being disputed but the issue is once she draws in the casual fan, what is the UFC doing to keep those casual fans interested in WMMA?

Karnak- And this may be something fans of WMMA aren't willing to accept, but in a MMA bubble female fighters are at best still widely tolerated, why would a Sarah Kaufmann be given a platform as big, or bigger, than a burgeoning male athlete in the sports biggest promotion?

Why shouldnt Sarah be given the platform? she is a well respected martial artist with an admirable fight record. Like I mentioned previously, in my opinon the womens division is being held to a different standard and that "burgeoning "  Athlete will more than likely be given that platform

If you have some time, I woul be interested to know how you would put together an all female card similar to what Chromium did without Ronda.

Karnak- You may say otherwise, but I'm pretty sure the MMA bubble still loathes Rousey's growing prominence, and at best tolerate her like they do the other women in the UFC

If you dont mind me asking, what is leading you to draw this conclusion?

Karnak- This is why for all his skill in side the cage, most of the massive potential casual audience for MMA, will never gravitate to a less than uninspiring persona like a Mighty Mouse; and unfortunately many more of the fighters within the UFC's male divisions.

In your opinion, do you think is is fair to keep Mighty Mouse and I say respectfully "hanging around" and not really promote him? if that is the case, why not just release him to go elsewhere? Mouse is a dominant champion, in your opinion, shouldnt he be treated as such?

For some reason, the thread I started on the Fight Valley Movie was deleted. This  is a shame because I put alot of effort into that thread.  I have sent a message to a Mod so hopefully I will get an explanation. In the meantime its offical...
